BrowseAloud ... Making websites talk!
City of Saskatoon has speech-enabled its website using BrowseAloud, free software for those who have difficulty reading online. This includes people with learning and literacy difficulties, dyslexia, mild visual impairments, or for those who speak English as a second language.
How does it work?
Follow these simple steps to download BrowseAloud:
Download BrowseAloud.
Once downloaded, run the application. The BrowseAloud icon will appear in the system tray, which is usually found in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
By simply placing the mouse cursor over the text, the relevant sentence will be read aloud and simultaneously highlighted. You can choose to listen to selected sections of text or the entire page from where your cursor is pointed.
To customize your BrowseAloud settings, right click on the BrowseAloud icon and choose 'Open BrowseAloud settings' from the menu. Here you can change the speed of the voice and the colors used in text highlighting, save text as an MP3, have links identified, customize pronunciations, and much more.
