The Business License Bylaw requires that all businesses operating from a commercial or industrial property obtain a City of Saskatoon Business License before beginning operations.
A business license is only valid for the location specified on the license and is non-transferable between locations. A license must be obtained for each business location.
All commercial business license applications are reviewed for compliance with land use regulations, as outlined in Zoning Bylaw 8770. Zoning regulations vary in across the city and can affect the type of business you are permitted to operate in some areas. Whether you are building a new structure or moving into an existing one, you should contact the Planning and Development Branch to determine if the location is zoned for the type of business you are planning to establish.
Commercial business license applications are also reviewed for compliance with building regulations. If structural alterations are planned or a change of use to the building will occur, a building permit is required. A building permit from the Building Standards Branch is required prior to the start of construction. The business license will not be issued until the proper permits have been taken out.
