Prior to applying to any civic heritage program, please contact the Heritage Section for an initial evaluation of your property’s heritage merits. Upon completion of the evaluation you may be eligible to apply for one of these programs:

Municipal Heritage Property
Community Heritage Register

The Community Heritage Register lists properties which have a heritage merit and contribute to the character of their neighbourhood or district. The Register provides an opportunity to recognize and showcase the features of properties.

Register properties must be maintained and the key exterior heritage features cannot be altered for a fixed number of years. However, there is no long-term guarantee of protection for the property as with the Municipal Heritage Property designation.

Incentives for eligible conservation work:

Fixed Elements

  • Property tax abatement up to 20% of costs related to restoration of architectural elements and renovation to meet building code requirements where it affects heritage elements of the building.

  • Partial funding of building permit fees.

  • Grants may be provided for non-governmental, tax-exempt properties, based on the property tax abatement formula up to a maximum of $2,000.

Flexible Elements

  • The City of Saskatoon will negotiate an appropriate "bundle" of flexible support services for each individual property. This may include working to develop building code equivalencies, providing streetscaping elements which enhance the heritage structure.

In return for the assisance provided, the owner will agree to certain conditions designed to protect and conserve the structure in an appropriate way.

Requirements to protect Register properties:

  • The City of Saskatoon and the owner will enter into a formal agreement for a fixed number of years. The City will register a caveat against the title of the property and any new owner will be bound by the agreement.

  • The abatement may be suspended or revoked if the property owner does not comply with the conditions of the agreement.

  • Other conditions might include specific requirements on covenants and easements, interpretation, how the property is to be conserved, restored or adapted to a new use, an approved preventative maintenance plan, and requirements for public access.
