Future Growth Study, 2000

The City of Saskatoon has a strong tradition of city planning and future growth planning. In 2000, the City of Saskatoon completed a Future Growth Study that identified the land base where the City could grow to 400,000 people over 50 years or more.  The Future Growth Study was endorsed by City Council and the Council of the Rural Municipality of Corman Park.

The Future Growth Study of 2000 recommended a development pattern that is:

  • compact, to prevent urban sprawl;
  • balanced, to ensure development on both the east and west sides of the City; and
  • centred around the Central Business District, to encourage people to visit, work and shop downtown and to foster an efficient public transit system.

The Future Growth Study also recommended 3 residential growth sectors:

  • East;
  • North-East; and
  • West.

The Future Growth Study recommended that detailed design analysis Sector Plans be done for each of these growth sectors. The recommended growth sectors contain about 4,000 acres each, and could contain all of the facilities and amenities to support up to 50,000 people per sector.
