When a meter reading card is left in your mailbox, this means that we were unable to access your meter(s). You can assist us by reading your meters yourself and submitting a meter reading online, by mail (postage pre-paid) or by phone. If you are mailing your reading, please date and sign the self-read card. Make sure that your address and meter number are clearly marked and if you wish, you may add your account number from your Utility Statement.
To leave a meter reading on our phone message system 24 hours a day, or to speak to a Customer Service Representative from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., call us at:

By reading your own meter(s), you can keep your account current and accurate between readings done by our meter readers. Although estimates are based on your account history, regular reads allow you to monitor your actual electric and water consumption.
There are many types of electric and water meters in service in Saskatoon. To ensure that your reading is accurate, you may wish to follow these helpful instructions:
This style of electric meter has four or five dials. Each dial is labeled with numbers from zero to nine and has one hand or pointer (moving in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction) that indicates the current reading of that dial. Reading the meter dials from right to left, draw the exact position of the hand on each dial onto the meter-reading card. If your meter has only four dials, leave the last dial on the left blank.
If you are phoning in the meter reading, you may tell us the exact position of the hand on each dial or you may follow these simple rules to interpret your electric meter reading:
Starting from the right, determine the reading of each dial.
- If the dial hand is between two numbers, record the lower number. For example, if the hand is between 3 and 4, this dial is reading 3.
- If the dial hand is between 9 and 0, it is reading 9. A dial hand between 0 and 1 reads 0. (The hand is always moving from the lower to the higher number and it must pass the number before it records it)
- If the dial hand is pointing directly at a number, look at the dial to the right. If the dial on the right has not yet passed 0, record the lower number for the dial in question. In the example below, the dial on the far left is still reading 5 as the dial to the right has not yet passed 0 and is still recording 9.
- When you call to give us the meter reading, read out the number from left to right.
This meter is reading 59037.
There are two types of electronic meters with segment reading displays:
Two Display Registers: This meter type has two alternating display registers that switch between a test display of eights (88:88:88) and a display of the actual meter reading in kilowatt hours.
Go here to see instructions for reading Two Display Registers.
Three Display Registers: This meter has three display registers. The first register is a test display of eights (888.88.88) and the second register displays the actual reading in kilowatt hours. This meter can also record electricity returned to the power grid by the customer. Intended for future use, the third register will record excess electricity produced by wind or solar generation if it is returned to the utility.
Go here to see instructions for reading Three Display Registers.
If your water meter has dials, each dial is numbered from zero to nine and has one hand or pointer moving in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction that indicates the current reading of the dial. The outside of each dial is also labelled with the digit it represents. As the dials are arranged in a circular pattern, match the labelled dials on the meter to the same dials on the card. Read from the lowest digit (10) to the highest digit (100,000 or 1,000,000), and draw the exact position of the hand on each dial. If you are phoning in the meter reading, you may tell us the position of each hand on the dials or you may follow these simple rules to interpret your water meter reading:
Starting from the 10 dial, determine the reading of each dial.
- If the dial hand is between two numbers, record the lower number. For example, if the hand is between 3 and 4, this dial is reading 3.
- If the dial hand is between 9 and 0, it is reading 9. A dial hand between 0 and 1 reads 0. (The hand is always moving from the lower to the higher number and it must pass the number before it records it)
- If the dial hand is pointing directly at a number, look at the previous dial. If the dial for the previous digit has not yet passed 0, record the lower number for the dial in question. In the example below, the 1,000 dial is still reading 2 as the hand on the 100 dial has not yet passed 0 and is still recording 9.
- When you call to give us the meter reading, read out the number from the highest to the lowest digit (1,000,000 or 100,000 to 10). Do not include the One Foot dial.
This meter is reading 384295
Water meters may have a digital reading just like the odometer in your car. If you have a digital meter, record all the numbers including shaded digit(s) in the boxes on the self-read card or online. To phone in your reading, simply read out all the numbers from left to right.
All valid reads will be used to bill your utility account. If you wish to have an actual read on your next bill, please submit your reading(s) online or by phone at least two business days before your next Bill Date. Meter readings sent by mail must be received three days before the Bill Date to allow time for processing. Your Utility Statement is billed on the same date each month; check the first page of your statement for your Bill Date.
If you wish to read your meter(s) and are unable to locate them at your home or business, please contact Customer Service at 975-2400 or 1 800 667 9944 for meter location information.
You may submit your meter reading through the Revenue Branch's on-line service.
Electrical and water meters are owned by the City of Saskatoon; our meter readers and service technicians must be able to access your meter(s). You can help us by keeping the area around your meters free of obstacles. If you are finishing your basement, please leave room around your water meter for reading, repairs and routine replacement. When planting trees or shrubs near your electric meter or the scan pad for your water meter, please ensure that they will not obstruct the view of the meter. If you have a dog, post a sign on your property.
