Inventory Management, through its Inventory Control section, is responsible for the disposal of used, damaged and obsolete items belonging to the City of Saskatoon.

The first means of disposal of any items is internal. Inventory Management first tries to determine if any other civic department can make use of an item that another department cannot. If it isn't possible that an item will be used internally, it is then disposed of externally.

Following the policy set down by City Council, the sale of surplus goods is done through public sale rather than private sale. This means that goods are disposed of by allowing all members of the public to have an opportunity to purchase the items, most often by formal Public Tender and through auction sales, or through pre-priced sale on a first come first served basis.

Formal Tender Sales are advertised in the Saturday Star Phoenix. Tender documents for Tender Sales are picked up at Inventory Management and must be returned by the closing time of the tender (2:00 p.m.) on the date specified in the Tender. While the items sold will vary, material disposed of in this manner may be things of a higher dollar value or of greater quantity. Items such as used vehicles and scrap metals are disposed of in this manner.

Inventory Management does not, as a rule, keep lists of names to be contacted in the event of a certain item being disposed of. Items come up for disposal on no set schedule or no particular time. The exception to this are the bicycle auctions which are held in the Spring (generally March & April) each year to dispose of lost and stolen bicycles that are unclaimed from the Saskatoon Police Service.
