New Fire Station #10

McClocklin Road

Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services is proposing that a new Fire Station be built on McClocklin Road with an opening date set for September, 2012. Saskatoon City Council has mandated that Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services has at least one fire apparatus attend at an emergency within four minutes, and to have additional resources on-site within eight minutes, 90% of the time. Currently, fire and protection services are provided to the northwest sector of Saskatoon by the fire fighters located at Fire Station #2, 3111 Diefenbaker Drive, with support from Fire Station #4, 2106 Faithfull Avenue and Fire Station #1, 125 Idywyld Drive South. Fire Station #10 will increase the level of service in the communities of Westview, Dundonald, Hudson Bay Industrial and Hampton Village and provide them with response times within the four and eight-minute benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why was this location chosen?

Two main criteria are used when choosing a location for a new Fire Station:

  • a central location within the area unable to be serviced with a four-minute response; and
  • a location along a main thoroughfare to increase the area that can be reached within four minutes.

A Fire Station on McClocklin Road is expected to provide the communities of Westview, Dundonald, Hudson Bay Industrial and Hampton Village with a four-minute response time.

How would I benefit from a Fire Station in Hampton Village?

A Fire Station in the vicinity provides you and your neighbours with trained professionals who have the knowledge and experience to help you when you experience a fire, medical emergency or other emergency. We are deeply committed to the people of Saskatoon and are ready at any time, day or night.

What can I expect when a fire truck responds to an emergency?

When an alarm sounds at the Fire Station, fire fighters have approximately 60 seconds to have the back wheels of their apparatus out the door. Once the truck is moving, the warning lights will start flashing to stop oncoming traffic and allow the fire truck to proceed. The location and type of emergency will be used to determine whether the fire truck will travel with the regular flow of traffic or use their lights and sirens. When a fire truck returns from an emergency, the firefighters on duty immediately prepare the truck to respond to another emergency (i.e. used hoses are washed and hung to dry and the truck is restocked).

How often are sirens used?

Although the actual number of emergencies is unpredictable, fire apparatus are required to use their sirens when responding to emergencies. However, Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services urges discretion in the use of sirens and air horns during late evening and early morning hours.

How many fire fighters will work at this Station?

Fire Station #10 will have one fire apparatus which will be manned by five firefighters each shift. Currently our shifts run from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. the next morning. Four shifts will be required to provide 24-hour coverage 365 days of the year. Employee parking spots will be available adjacent to the building.

What can I expect when I have a Fire Station as a neighbour?

Fire Stations make good neighbours! Fire Stations and grounds are always well maintained and clean. Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services prides itself in being a good community member and values its reputation of volunteerism.

How will you ensure that a fire truck does not endanger the lives of those in the vicinity?

Warning lights are placed at the Fire Station's exits to alert residents and drivers when a fire apparatus will be leaving. Even when responding to an emergency, fire trucks are required to drive carefully, stop at all traffic lights and only proceed when it is safe to do so. Safety is our business and we work hard to ensure that another emergency is not created by our response to the first one.
