Courtesy Cancellation of Snow Route Tickets

As a courtesy for the first Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban declared by the City of Saskatoon for the expanded snow route (from 69 streets to approximately 220 streets/street segments), owners of all vehicles ticketed for Snow Route violations will be contacted and advised that their Snow Route tickets have been cancelled. If the fine has already been paid, it will be refunded. This one-time courtesy also applies to owners of vehicles that were towed from the Snow Route.

The City issued approximately 500 Snow Route tickets and towed approximately 20 vehicles during the temporary parking ban. In the future, any vehicles parked on the Snow Route during a Temporary Parking Ban, before that street has been cleared, will be ticketed and towed.

The Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban was in effect from 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010 through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2010. A 24-hour extension was required due to the large quantity of snow (25 centimetres).

Parking is permitted on a Snow Route street during a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban after that street has been cleared.

Note that on-street parking is permitted to a maximum of 36 hours in residential areas.

------------------------------------------

Snow accumulation on high traffic "Snow Route" streets can be cleared more quickly and efficiently when parked vehicles are removed. After a significant amount of snow (in excess of 7 centimetres) and/or winds that cause drifting on high traffic streets, a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban may be declared. By declaring the Snow Route and enforcing the Temporary Parking Ban, the City hopes to improve safety and mobility for everyone through the winter months.

Motorists are responsible for knowing when a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban is in effect.

To learn if a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban has been declared, pre-register to receive Snow Route e-Notifications; listen to the local news; or call the City’s 24-hour Snow & Ice Hotline at 975-2491.

Register to Receive Snow Route e-Notifications

You can register to receive an e-Notification every time a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban is declared, and when it is lifted. If you have more than one email address, or wish to receive e-Notification at home and at the office, you can register twice.

When you register for the Snow Route e-Notification service, you will only receive information relating to Snow Route Temporary Parking Bans. The service is free and you may unsubscribe at any time.

To register, email snow.route@saskatoon.ca and enter your first and last name in the body of the email.

After you have submitted your registration, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your request for the e-Notification. If you do not confirm your request, you will not be added to the Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban e-Notification database, and you will not receive any e-Notifications.

HELP US HELP YOU! Please move your parked vehicle from designated Snow Route streets/street segments when snow plowing is apparent. An unobstructed roadway is cleared more quickly, and reduces inconvenience to parked vehicles and traffic flow.

How the Snow Route works:

  • The Snow Route network includes approximately 220 high traffic streets/street segments that are part of the Priority System.

  • Some of these streets are already "No Parking" zones. To make it easier to recognize the Snow Route, signs like the one displayed at the top of the page will be posted on streets not already banned for parking.

  • When a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban is declared motorists have 8 hours to remove parked vehicles from a street on the Snow Route. Vehicles not moved within 8 hours will be ticketed and towed to a street nearby or impounded, depending on the circumstances.

  • When required, a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban will be declared starting at either 7:00 a.m. or at 3:00 p.m., and will be in effect for 72 hours following the 8 hour notice to remove parked vehicles. Note: a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban may be extended by another declaration, if required, due to additional snow accumulation.

How to Recognize the Designated Snow Route Streets

The Snow Route has special signs posted indicating “No Parking – Snow Route”. Watch for these signs and remember, the no parking restriction is only in effect when the Snow Route has been declared. Check out local media during severe weather to learn if the Snow Route has been declared, or call the Snow & Ice Hotline at 975-2491.
