Kensington Storm Trunk Installation

About The Project

The Kensington Storm Trunk project involves the installation of a major storm sewer pipe that will connect to the existing storm sewer system and provide service to the future Kensington neighbourhood.

It is expected that the project will be complete by approximately mid October to allow for repaving of the disturbed area. This schedule is subject to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

The work involves digging a trench in the street and installing a 900 mm (3 foot) diameter pipe, backfilling and paving.

The work will be undertaken in two- to three-block sections starting at the east end of Diefenbaker Drive and continuing west to Steeves Avenue; and then working northward along Steeves Avenue to 33rd Street as the work is completed.

Other facts about the project:

  • HAMM Construction Ltd. has been contracted to complete the work.
  • The material for the project will be stored north of 33rd Street to ensure the least amount of work space on the roadway is needed to complete the project.
  • The installation requires digging a trench that is about 2.5 metres wide and 5 to 7 metres deep.  Secure fencing and signage will be installed around the trench.
  • As each two- to three-block section of work is complete, crews will backfill that section of roadway.
  • After a section of roadway is backfilled, it will be restored to a gravel surface and traffic will be able to resume in that area.
  • Repaving of the project area will occur once the entire project is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be major traffic restrictions?

Traffic on Diefenbaker Drive will be detoured during the installation work on that roadway. Signs will be posted directing motorists to alternate routes as required.

As the work is underway on each two- to three-block section along Steeves Avenue, a complete closure of that section of roadway will be necessary. However, one entrance to adjacent crescents will be maintained at all times. Please be aware as the work progresses so you can plan your route accordingly.

What about parking?

For households directly adjacent to the work in progress, access to parking will be restricted and alternative parking will need to be used around the neighbourhood.

Will water and sewer service be affected?

Some households will have water and sewer interrruptions (from 6 hours to a maximum of 24 hours):

  • Along the east side of Steeves Avenue from Diefenbaker Drive to the north leg of Shea Crescent
  • Along the north side of Diefenbaker Drive from the east leg of Fisher Crescent to the east side of Steeves Avenue

Households affected will receive 48 hours notice prior to water and sewer service interruption.

Will the bus routes change?

Bus routes along the construction route will be affected throughout the project. During construction, please check the signs posted for alternate bus stop locations or call Saskatoon Transit at 975-3100.
