How the Sewer System Works

The City of Saskatoon maintains two separate sewer systems. The sanitary sewer system carries wastewater from homes, commercial buildings and industry facilities to the City’s wastewater treatment plant. After treatment, the water is returned to the South Saskatchewan River. The storm sewer system carries rainfall and other surface run-off from parking lots, roads and private properties directly into the river without treatment.

Every time you flush the toilet, take a shower or wash the dishes, you send wastewater down the drain to an underground network of pipes. See where it goes by visiting the link in the menu at the left.

Saskatoon has an efficient sewer system, but it must evolve to meet the needs of our growing population. The City has undertaken:

  • A review of the Sewer Use Bylaw to address operational practices and regulatory changes.
  • A source control management approach controls substances so that they either do not enter or that limited quantities enter the sewer system. See the benefits of source control management by visiting the link in the menu at the left.
  • View the timeline of upgrades in the  seven-year, $50 million expansion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

An updated Sewer Use Bylaw is necessary to meet Saskatoon’s wastewater management requirements. Learn more about the challenges facing the system by visiting the link in the meu at the left.
