Earth Hour 2009

M A R C H    2 8   -   8 : 3 0 P M

At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, the world will turn off its lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to show symbolic support for action on climate change.

The City, in partnership with a number of local businesses and community groups, encourages residents to get involved and

Turn off your lights at home, and in the office, for Earth Hour. Or take it even further and plan to unplug unnecessary appliances and electronics for Earth Hour!

What is the City of Saskatoon doing?

  • The Mendel Art Gallery will close early (at 8:00 p.m.) and shut off all lights.
  • All exterior lights and most interior lights at City Hall will be turned off.
  • Civic Leisure Centres will remain open but unnecessary lights will be turned off.
  • River Landing's Prairie Wind will be darkened.
  • The decorative lighting on the Traffic Bridge will be shut off.
  • Saskatoon Fire & Protective Services will shut off lights in all fire stations.
  • TCU Place event coordinators will ask if any clients using the facility wish to participate and reduce lighting whenever possible.
  • All staff will be encouraged to turn off their computers and monitors, whenever possible.
  • What can you do?

Unplugging your unnecessary appliances and electronics makes a big difference! You would be surprised if you measured the "phantom electrical load" in your home. Even when it isn't running, a DVD or VCR uses electricity to run its clock. The same is true for your stove, microwave, and/or coffee pot. Even your phone charger draws power if it's left plugged in after you charge your phone! Unplugging your unnecessary appliances and electronics will make a huge difference during Earth Hour, and in your wallet if you unplug them consistently.

Register your household today for Earth Hour, and let the world know of your support.

Use Earth Hour to spend time with friends and family or enjoy an unplugged hour of peace in your own company:

  • plan a dinner by candlelight
  • play a boardgame
  • go for a walk
  • organize a fondue party
  • read a book
  • host a candlight party for friends and neighbours
  • do crafts with your kids
  • soak in a bath
