Frequently Asked Questions
Currently the City of Saskatoon is not accepting any new applications due to the fact that the EcoLogo certified Greenpower has been fully subscribed as per information received from SaskPower.
What is Greenpower?
Greenpower is electrical power that is generated by the wind or emerging renewable energy resources. Recently, wind power generated through a project undertaken by SaskPower, is being added to the provincial electrical system reducing the need to generate electricity from other traditional means such as coal. Customers who support this environmentally friendly initiative can be a part of it by purchasing blocks of power to promote the generation of this power.
What are customers purchasing? (rates effective April 1, 2003 by SaskPower)
Greenpower is an optional electricity product for those willing to pay a little more for environmentally preferable electricity, as it still costs more to produce green power than electricity generated from sources with greater environmental impact. Customers can purchase blocks of 100 kilowatt hours (kWh) for $2.50 plus the applicable GST and PST. (Residential customers will pay GST and Not PST, while Commercial customers will pay both GST and PST.) The flat amount of $2.50 per 100 kWh will appear on their monthly bill as an additional charge. There is no reduction of the city's portion of the electrical consumption. The charge will be in additional to the monthly EPP amount for those customers on the City's Equalized Payment Program.
How do customers apply?
City of Saskatoon electrical customers can apply for Greenpower by completing the application form and delivering it to Customer Service at City Hall, faxing to 975-7975 or mail to PO Box 7030, Saskatoon, SK S7K 8E3; or calling the Customer Service Center at 975-2400. Customers must identify the account number, number of blocks they agree to purchase and the effective date. If the effective date is not indicated, it will be set up to take effect on their next bill. (See application form below)
Can customers purchase multiple blocks?
Yes...customers will be allowed to purchase multiple blocks of Greenpower but must indicate the amount they wish to purchase at the outset. Changing the amount they wish to purchase every month will not be allowed, however customers can periodically re-apply for a different amount or cancel their purchase with one-month's notice. There is no limit to the amount that can be purchased. The amount of monthly Greenpower that a customer could purchase to cover their own consumption can be roughly determined by taking the Average consumption over the past year (in kWh) and dividing by 100.
For information, 100 kWh of electricity will operate:
- a computer and printer 4 hours per day for 5 months
- an energy efficient 18 cubit foot refrigerator for 2 months
- a small block heater 4 hours per day for 25 days
- a high pressure sodium yard light overnight (10 hours per day) for 2 months
When does Greenpower billing begin?
The Greenpower charge will appear on the customer's next bill after the effective date identified on the application form.
