General
The purpose of roadway lighting is to produce timely, accurate and safe visibility at night. As a result, this will:
-
Facilitate the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians;
-
Reduce night time accidents;
-
Raise a sense of personal security; and,
-
Encourage the night time use of the area.
Saskatoon Light & Power owns and maintains approximately 20,000 street lights.
-
The majority are High Pressure Sodium (orange/yellow light), some areas have Metal Halide (white with a hint of blue).
-
These are on roadways as well as in parks.
Roadway and pathway lighting is designed to meet the Illumination Engineering Society of North America Guidelines (IES RP-8-00 and DG-5-94).
Saskatoon Light & Power is exploring new technologies such as LED (light emitting diode) lighting or fixtures. There is currently a pilot project on the 200/300 blocks of Boychuk Drive to test three manufacturers of LED fixtures. The project will look at the photometric performance (how well the street is lit), colour, energy savings, ease of installation, durability and longevity.
Trouble
Lights on arterial and collector roads are patrolled on a regular basis. However, if you should see a problem with a street light such as:
-
It does not come on at night;
-
Is on all day;
-
Turns on/off during the night (cycling); or
-
Is damaged or vandalized,
please contact us at 975-2414 or 975-2621 (24 hr trouble line) or email us at Saskatoon.Light.Power@Saskatoon.ca. Be sure to include the location of the streetlight (e.g. address, street intersection).
For Traffic Light Trouble call 975-2981
