Saskatoon Light & Power (SL&P) strives to maintain, improve, and expand our distribution system to meet and exceed the electrical requirements of our customers. The following is a summary of some of the larger capital projects that are scheduled for the current year.
DISTRIBUTION LINES
College Park
We will be installing two new 4000 V feeders into the south and south-west areas of College Park to improve the power quality and reliability of the supply into both the residential and commercial areas of south College Park.
Eastview & Brevoort Park
A cable replacement of the aging infrastructure will be taking place in areas of both Eastview and Brevoort Park. The cables in these areas are nearing the end of their life cycle and due for replacement. SL&P is moving ahead to replace these cables before failure is incurred. This will improve the power quality and reliability of the supply into these areas.
NETWORK
Vaults
Two new vaults will be built in the downtown Network distribution area. Vault 17 is being constructed on 23rd Street to extend the supply of the Network into the warehouse area. Vault 18 will be constructed on 3rd Avenue to improve the availability of Network supply into the downtown business area. The Network is a guaranteed power supply for the area to allow for superior power supply and reliability for the Central Business District which includes commercial business, apartment/condos, civic, provincial and federal properties.
Protection
SL&P is continuing with the project to upgrade and install primary protection in the equipment in the vaults for the Central Business District. This enhances the reliability of the Network system and the monitoring of the equipment in place.
STREET LIGHTING
Installation of street lighting will continue in new residential neighbourhoods such as Hampton Village, Stonebridge, Stonebridge Commercial, Willowgrove, Rosewood and Blairmore.
Street Light Pole Mitigation
SL&P is continuing the program of inspecting the steel street lighting poles throughout the franchise area. Poles identified as deteriorated beyond normal wear are then either restored or replaced based on their condition. This is a proactive approach to dealing with an aging infrastructure that is affected by rust and the elements. Replacement poles are galvanized steel which will greatly increase the life cycle of these poles from the past standard of steel poles.
