McCormond Drive and Highway 7 Compost Depots Remain Open Until November 15

For Release: November 10, 2009
US09-374

The City of Saskatoon’s two free compost depots on McOrmond Drive and Highway 7 (at 11th Street) will both remain open an extra week until Sunday, November 15. The extension is due to a demand from residents still working on fall yard clean-up and above seasonal weather forecasted for this week. The depots were originally scheduled to close last weekend.

Operating Hours:

            November 10 to 15 (including Remembrance Day) - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In addition to unbagged leaves and grass, the depots now accept non-Elm tree branches and pumpkins that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Due to the threat of Dutch Elm Disease, Provincial regulations prohibit the acceptance of Elm and any other material that cannot be distinguished from Elm at the depots. Elm wood can be disposed of at the City Landfill. Compost from the new depots is used throughout various civic departments to help offset the need to purchase topsoil.

For additional information on the City’s composting program, please contact 975-2486 or visit www.saskatoon.ca, search under “c” for composting.
