For Immediate Release: August 24, 2010
The Traffic Bridge will be closed immediately to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists until further notice, based on preliminary inspection results received today.
The Traffic Bridge was undergoing a comprehensive inspection, which started yesterday, and the results from the preliminary inspection indicate that deterioration under the bridge needs further inspection, and must be closed completely in the interest of public safety.
“When the preliminary inspection results came back this afternoon, the inspectors were not able to certify that the lower steel structural members inspected so far were safe,” explained Infrastructure Services General Manger Mike Gutek. “We knew there was corrosion under there, but based on the limits and the extent of the deterioration, and in the interest of public safety, we are closing the bridge indefinitely.”
The comprehensive inspection will continue for the rest of this week. More results will be known next week, and civic administration will evaluate possible courses of action. The Traffic Bridge undergoes a visual inspection every year as well.
Earlier in the year, the City had started discussions with the community on what they wanted for the future of the Traffic Bridge, as its serviceable life was coming to an end. The next public consultation on the Traffic Bridge will be in September.
