The First Step Program
First Step is a partnership program between the City of Saskatoon, Recreation & Community Development Department and Saskatchewan Health Authority, Chronic Disease Management.
The program's aim is to provide a high quality prevention/rehabilitation program to people with health concerns within and around Saskatoon.
Even if you are not familiar with regular exercise, or if your health concerns have limited regular exercise, you'll find First Step an important move towards improving your quality of life.
How to Get Started
1. Sign Up Join the program at any time by self-referral or by medical professional referral. Click here to download the application form or contact the First Step / Wellness Coordinator at 306-975-3121 to have a form mailed to you.
2. Intake Assessment: Set your goals while reviewing your medical history.
3. Orientation and Program Start: You will be introduced to the program on the track and with specialized equipment that matches your abilities.
4. One -on-One Movement Assessment: Before starting group strength classes. Individual modifications are provided.
5. Ongoing Coaching: We're here to help you reach your goals. Exercise Specialists are present to answer your questions regarding your fitness needs and monitor your health.
6. Graduate Program: Provides continued support. After 4 months, move to a 3 times/week Grad Card or a discounted LeisureCard (1 year) for unlimited access to all Leisure Centres.
Location & Program Hours
Classes are held at the Saskatoon Field House, 2020 College Drive.
Tuesday & Thursdays - You have the option to attend within the following exercise program times. Your start and end time is up to you as long as you are done within the program time. There are group strength classes at various times to accommodate participants different start times (see Participant Information Sheet).
8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. & / or 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Graduates can add an optional third day:
Saturdays
9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Functional Strength Training
Instructor-led group classes focusing on strength, balance and agility training. Various levels provided
Aerobic Exercise
For your heart and lungs utilizing specialized equipment and the world class track.
Education
Education classes run seasonally from October through June and are designed to help you understand your condition and make lasting lifestyle changes for an improved quality of life. Topics include:
- Goal setting
- The benefits of exercise
- Risk factor management
- Nutrition
- Diabetes and exercise
- Stress management
- Stages of change
- Footwear / foot care

Cost
The cost includes 4 months of supervised exercise (2 times/week) and initial assessment. Prices valid until March 31, 2025.
- Main participant - $ 279.25 including tax (cost may vary depending on which program you are assigned to.)
- Support person - $ 87.75 including tax (This fee is discounted for a spouse, friend or relative to join you and support your goal. )

Graduate Program
You have the option to continue on and become a part of our Graduate Program. You may purchase a First Step Graduate Card that is available to all First Step graduates and supports. The Graduate Card allows you to continue access to the facility during the First Step program times. The Graduate Program runs Tuesday, Thursday and opens a 3rd day on Saturdays to progress to training 3 times/week.
Or, you may choose to purchase a LeisureCard. A LeisureCard allows you to have continued access to the facility during the First Step program times, in addition to seven days a week at all of the Leisure Centres, as well as the Terry Fox Track (in Forest Park) and outdoor pools in the summer months.
