 COVID-19 Response for Saskatoon Residents

On March 19, 2020, the City decided to close public access to City Hall and all City buildings, including fire stations, leisure facilities, attractions and Saskatoon Public Library locations. While we are closed to the public, our business operations continue to ensure core services for our residents as much as possible. Public transit currently remains operational.

Labour Group: 
  1. Provides instruction using effective and appropriate teaching methodology and safe participant procedures for aquatic programs.

  2. Prepares lesson plans for swimming lessons according to instructional standards.

  3. Completes worksheets, takes attendance, and completes participant progress reports.

  4. Safeguards public admission and rental group activities and responds to emergency situations according to standards.

  5. Participates in the in-service training programs established to maintain fitness levels and lifeguard standards.

  6. Maintains a hazard-free, clean, and safe pool and work area.

  7. Provides education to participants and the public about safety in and around the water, e.g. bulletin boards, handouts and tours.

  8. Conducts daily safety checks of play equipment, emergency first aid equipment, and performs daily water tests.

  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Grade 10 education.

  • Possession of the following valid qualifications:

- National Lifeguard Service certification (Pool Option),

- CPR Level C,

- Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification and

- Aquatic Emergency Care Award or Red Cross Standard First Aid.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months after date of hire, valid Lifesaving Instructor certification (with Swim Patrol update).

  • Six month’s related experience instructing and as a lifeguard preferred.

  • Knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, including first aid and emergency procedures, and instructional techniques, methods and practices.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor and the public.

  • Ability to demonstrate skills and techniques required and maintain fitness level necessary.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with supervisor, staff and the public.

  • Ability to apply theory to practical learning situations.

  • Ability to evaluate and adjust lesson plans to meet the participant needs.

  • Ability to work with the assigned, designated participant group.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and provide direction during emergency situations.

Written verification of current aquatic qualifications is required with application.

Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
$19.68 to $21.69 per hour (2018 rates)
Requires Security Check: 
Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment.
