2019 Federal Election Local Candidates Survey

2019 Federal Election Local Candidates Survey

The City of Saskatoon's City Council has released a survey to all local federal election candidates and their parties to learn their positions on the federal Gas Tax Fund Transfer. The survey questions are based on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) election platform vision Building Better Lives.

Federal election candidates and parties will be asked the following three questions:

  1. Does your party support permanently doubling the Gas Tax Fund for the renewal and construction of municipal infrastructure?
  2. Does your support include an annual escalation of at least 3.5% to ensure the Gas Tax Fund keeps pace with construction costs?
  3. What are your party's plans in this regard?

Survey responses to these questions will help prospective voters gain a better understanding of how various parties aim to improve the local economy and enhance the quality of life in our city.

The federal Gas Tax Fund is a transfer payment that flows directly from the Government of Canada to municipalities. Established in 2005, it is a valuable and predictable infrastructure funding program that helps the City of Saskatoon invest in projects that improve mobility, support cleaner air and enhance our quality of life.

In 2019, the City of Saskatoon will receive a total transfer of approximately $28 million in 2019 from the Gas Tax Fund.

As part of renewing Canada's core infrastructure, FCM has adopted a position that calls on all federal election parties to permanently double the Gas Tax Fund transfer to support the renewal of roads, bridges, water systems and other infrastructure that supports our quality of life. In addition, an annual 3.5% boost is proposed to help keep pace with rising construction costs.

This survey was part of a City Council Motion September 30, 2019, (14.2 on Agenda) to advocate to all Saskatoon candidates running for all political parties in the 2019 federal election, that they commit to permanently doubling the federal Gas Tax Fund, including a 3.5% annual escalator.

This survey is now closed. Five political parties participated in the Gas Tax Funding Survey.

  • Christian Heritage Party
  • Green Party of Canada
  • Liberal Party of Canada
  • New Democratic Party
  • People's Party of Canada
