Structure fire in the 100 Block of Avenue B South
At 01:41 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received a radio communication from the Saskatoon Police Communications reporting a structure fire in the 100 block of Avenue B South. Four engines, one aerial unit, one rescue unit and the on-duty Battalion Chief were dispatched. Fire crews arrived at 01:43 a.m. to a structure fully involved in fire and heavy smoke. A defensive, exterior attack by fire crews was initiated. At 2:01 a.m., the structure's roof and North wall collapsed. At this point in the fire, focus was on suppression, precautions and planning for the potential of further structural collapse.
Throughout the incident, relief fire crews were sent to the scene in order to provide rehabilitation opportunities for firefighters. A Chief Safety Officer responded to the scene to provide support on the fire ground. A Fire Investigator is on scene. SaskEnergy and Saskatoon Light and Power attended the scene to shut the natural gas off to the structure and deenergize the lines to provide utility safety on site.
At approximately 6:00 a.m., a City of Saskatoon excavator was requested to take the unstable structure safely down in order to fully extinguish the fire. The excavator arrived on scene at 6:22 a.m. and began to bring the structure down to the ground at 6:24 a.m.
Firefighters have begun packing up tools and equipment. Decontamination of gear, tools and equipment are underway at the fire stations so that all front line apparatus are fully functional and available for response.
The Fire Investigator and Police Investigator will work together to conduct a fire investigation from a safe standpoint.
An update on damage estimate and the cause/origin of the fire will follow as soon as practical.
