Mendel Art Gallery Re-Use Plan
In June 2014, the Children’s Discovery Museum was approved to be the new tenant of the Mendel building. The Children’s Museum plans to develop a world-class, multi-purpose space to provide public programming and experiential learning opportunities where children and families will have fun.
The Children’s Discovery Museum’s mission is to foster creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning in children 12 and under through hands-on exhibits, programming and outreach. It is a unique organization that brings together children, families and community in meaningful interactions, developing essential skills and sparking creativity.
The Museum anticipates annual visitation of 60,000 people and 12,000 ft2 of exhibition area. In addition to self-guided exhibits, the Museum will have on-going programming including daily activities for patrons, school group activities, day camps, and educational classes
The project includes a partnership between the City and the Children’s Museum to ensure that the Mendel Building is animated and that it is connected to the Nutrien Playland at Kinsmen Park through priority-driven, targeted programming.
The total Mendel Building Area is 33,000ft2 and the City will retain ownership of the facility. The Children’s Museum will operate and manage the majority of the Mendel Building (28,000ft2), with the exception of the Civic Conservatory which will continue to be operated by the City.
