Carbon monoxide safety: check intake pipes and exhaust vents
With the recent influx of snow, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) wants to remind residents to check intake pipes and exhaust vents that may be blocked with snow or ice. A plugged exhaust could result in carbon monoxide (CO) being pushed back into your home or cause your furnace to shut down. Residents should check their intake pipes and exhaust vents during and after heavy snowfalls and clear any snow away from the opening if it builds up.
Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness or loss of consciousness. In severe cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. The elderly, children and people with heart or respiratory conditions may be particularly sensitive to CO.
In an emergency, seconds count; a functioning CO alarm can be the difference in preventing a tragedy in your home. CO alarms should be installed on all levels of the home so that you can be alerted if dangerous levels of CO are accumulating.
If your CO alarm is sounding or if you believe you are experiencing the effects of CO poisoning, evacuate all occupants and pets from the home and immediately call 911.
