The 2017 Building Better Roads program focused mainly on improvements to street and sidewalk conditions in Saskatoon’s residential neighbourhoods. So far this year, 185 kilometers of roadways have been improved and 10 kilometers of sidewalks have been replaced in 44 neighbourhoods. Construction will continue until it snows or gets too cold.

One block of 1st Avenue north, between Princess Street and 3rd Avenue north, will be closed on Friday, October 27, 2017, to allow for roadway patching. This closure is scheduled to last one day, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances.

The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) continues to take steps to improve safety and service for Saskatoon residents.  To meet these goals it plans to relocate Fire Station No. 5 from Central Avenue to the College Quarter at the University of Saskatchewan.

“What we want everyone to understand about the new service model is that it’s aimed at increasing safety and decreasing overlap between stations,” says Fire Chief Morgan Hackl. “Emergency services to the Sutherland, University and other nearby area neighbourhoods will be maintained, or even improved by the new location.”

Two northbound lanes of Highway 11 at the Circle Drive Cloverleaf will be closed starting today, to allow for repairs involving a semi last week. Access to all loops at the Highway 11 and Circle Drive Cloverleaf Overpass will remain open during repairs. The median northbound lane will remain open during the duration of the work. Construction will last approximately one week, barring weather delays or unforeseen circumstances.

Motorists are alerted to prepare for expected delays in the area.

Current weather forecasts predict rain, high winds and a possibility of snow flurries overnight in the Saskatoon area. Evening temperatures are expected to dip below freezing, creating the potential for freezing rain and the possibility of some icy road conditions. 

If possible, drivers may want to leave early for their commute this afternoon and tomorrow morning, and use extra caution on Circle Drive, overpasses and bridges where icy conditions might happen.
