Extreme Heat Emergency Response Plan: Level II activated
June 29, 2023 - 2:00pm
- Ensuring your pet has plenty of fresh water to drink
- Monitoring your pet for signs of heat stress such as rapid panting
- Never leaving pets in parked cars for any amount of time
- Offering your pet a means to cool down such as a wading pool or damp towel
- Drink extra water,
- Increase breaks out of the sun
- Modify work duties to prevent heat illness
Ahead of the warm temperatures this weekend, the Saskatoon Emergency Management Organization (EMO) will activate the Saskatoon Extreme Heat Emergency Response Plan from Friday, June 30 to Monday, July 3 to support residents in Saskatoon, especially those vulnerable to the heat.
The Saskatoon Extreme Heat Emergency Response Plan is a coordinated response that provides residents with access to cooling locations, outreach services, wellness checks and water distribution during extreme heat. Individuals and families experiencing distress from the heat can visit any of the designated cool-down locations throughout the city. Partner organizations will also distribute water to vulnerable residents and have access to misting tents to provide another way to cool down.
Extreme heat can cause serious negative health impacts ranging from dehydration and heat exhaustion to heat stroke and potentially death. Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for individuals who live in a residence without air conditioning or a way to cool the home, are older adults, and who also have pre-existing health conditions. Residents can help those most vulnerable to the extreme and prolonged heat by checking on family, friends and neighbours, sharing cool-down locations and by alerting emergency services if they see someone in distress.
In an emergency, call 911 immediately.
Other things to consider during days of extreme heat:
Outdoor Events
If you're planning to enjoy outdoor festivities, be sure to have a plan to stay hydrated and stay cool. Consider taking cool water with you. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, before you feel thirsty. Limit physical activity during the hottest hours and seek out shade to rest in.
River Safety
Although the South Saskatchewan River may provide a tempting option to cool down on hot days, EMO reminds residents that the river is unpredictable and swimming in the river is prohibited. The river has many hazards including changing currents and an unstable bottom.
Pet Wellness
On warm summer days, it’s important to keep your pets safe and comfortable. Considerations include:
For more information on how to keep your pet safe this summer, contact your local veterinarian.
Working Safe
As the humidex rises, those who work outdoors are encouraged to take necessary actions including:
For safety tips and guidelines for employees working in hot conditions, visit the Government of Saskatchewan’s Working Outdoors page.
Transit Safe Bus Program
As always, Saskatoon Transit offers the Safe Bus Program designed to assist anyone, of any age, that needs immediate shelter or needs to contact emergency services. If you need help, safely flag down a bus or go to a parked bus. Transit operators can contact emergency services directly through the on-bus radio system and will give the person in need a safe place to wait.
Smart Yard and Garden Watering
During heat waves, there is increased water usage. The City encourages residents to be water wise by watering your lawn and trees early in the morning and skip windy days to minimize evaporation. Smart watering helps the environment and can save you money during hot summer months. Follow these quick lawn care tips to be more efficient with your water and learn more ways to be water wise.

Reminder: School Zone and Playground Zone reduced speed limits are in effect year-round
June 28, 2023 - 10:00am
- School Zone & Playground Zone reduced speeds are 30 km/h every day, all year from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Where School and Playground Zone signs do not include a posted speed limit sign, treat the sign as a caution and pay close attention through the area.
- Speed enforcement activities will be aligned with School Zone and Playground Zone effective hours.
The City is issuing a friendly reminder that reduced speed limits in school zones and playground zones are in effect year-round. With the end of the school year and summer season upon us, it is important to remember that speed limits in school and playground zones remain 30 km/h every day, all year from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The reduced speeds where children play allow a driver more time to react, a wider field of vision and a chance to come to a complete stop sooner.
Key points to remember:
Thanks for driving responsibly and adhering to reduced speed limits year-round!

City warns public: beware of ongoing tree scam
June 27, 2023 - 10:00am
- The City never requests or collects credit card, bank accounts or any sort of personal information from customers via phone, text or email.
- Never give out your personal or banking information, or credit card number over the phone, by text or email. It is a best practice to block suspicious phone numbers and delete them after reporting.
- Do not click on suspicious web links.
The City is warning residents that a tree removal scam appears to be happening in Saskatoon, having received calls from concerned residents.
Several residents reported receiving a phone call last week in the evening from someone claiming to be from the City of Saskatoon. The caller asked to schedule an appointment to remove their “old and ugly” City elm trees. Something about the call seemed off to the residents so they called the City’s Urban Forestry (UF) department to verify whether it was legitimate. The City's Urban Forestry team does not work in the evening to make these sorts of calls, and to note, there were no City trees at the residential properties in question.
The City wants residents to know this appears to be an impersonation scam; Urban Forestry does not call residents regarding tree removal of aged City trees. Additionally, the City’s Bylaw Enforcement and Fire departments also do not contact residents regarding tree removal or the bylaws they administer.
Helpful reminders to help protect residents from potential scammers:
Scammers typically use the information they gather over the phone to get money or commit identity theft. Residents should contact their bank if they have become a victim of fraud and also report these types of phone or online scams to Saskatoon Police Service at saskatoonpolice.ca/onlinereporting/fraud/ or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center, 1-888-495-8501.
Concerned residents may also call the City of Saskatoon to speak with a Service Saskatoon Customer Care Representative at 306-975-2476.
New signs in Hyde Park teach about importance of wetlands
June 27, 2023 - 9:00am
The City is pleased to announce the installation of two new interpretive signs in Hyde Park, a naturalized park located in the Rosewood neighbourhood.
The educational signs are designed to help visitors understand the importance of the park’s naturalized wetlands and the critical habitats they provide to a variety of plants and animals throughout the year.
Production and installation were made possible through generous contributions from Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation. These two organizations have committed to enhancing the educational and habitat components of the park, unique due to its preservation of wetlands in their naturalized state and their size and location within the city.
Illustrated by local artist, curator and writer, David Geary, the signs depict the plants and wildlife that may be seen in Hyde Park in the spring/summer and fall/winter months.
The signs are now in place for park visitors to enjoy as they stroll along the east and west paths of the park and will be in place year-round.
For more information on Hyde Park, visit saskatoon.ca/engage/hyde-park.
About Hyde Park
Hyde Park, located in the Rosewood neighbourhood, is a 123-acre naturalized park. The park was first identified in 2007 in the South East Park Landscape Master Plan when the City, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation made it a joint priority to approach the development of the Hyde Stormwater Management Area in an innovative way and work with the land in its naturalized state. Through this process, it was decided it should serve as a wetland, storm water pond area, and a centre for interpretative and educational programming with respect to wetlands and natural habitat. Through feedback from the community, the final park design evolved to include a total of five ponds, numerous walking trails and sports fields, play equipment, and two off-leash dog parks.

University of Saskatchewan and City of Saskatoon mark fifth anniversary of MOU with webpage launch
June 26, 2023 - 10:00am
- Reconciliation Initiatives
- Infrastructure and Land Development
- Research Connections
- Student Engagement
- Sustainability
Today, the City of Saskatoon (City) and the University of Saskatchewan (USask) launched a new webpage to highlight the collaborations between the two organizations achieved through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed five years ago.
The City and USask have a longstanding history of collaboration and partnerships, which has strengthened communities through education, research and engagement. That relationship was reaffirmed in 2018 when the two signed a memorandum of understanding to explore new and existing collaborations to address issues related to urban planning, land development, reconciliation, transit and research collaborations. The new webpage USask and the City of Saskatoon MOU - Leadership | University of Saskatchewan will offer residents greater access to, and awareness of, the activities advanced through the MOU.
“The unique partnership between the City and the University of Saskatchewan is resulting in real benefits for residents of Saskatoon through the collaboration on many exciting and one-of-a-kind projects,” said Charlie Clark, Mayor of Saskatoon. “These projects are working to provide an improved quality of life for our residents today and in the future, addressing a variety of challenges the University and City are uniquely positioned to tackle together.”
“Over the past five years, the University of Saskatchewan and the City of Saskatoon have taken significant steps to strengthen our long-standing relationship and partnership with innovative initiatives ranging from sustainability to Reconciliation, as we work together to support our city and the communities we serve,” said USask President Peter Stoicheff. “To be the university the world needs, we must be the university our city and province needs as well. Saskatoon is a place many USask alumni call home, and through the continued partnership established in our MOU, we are successfully collaborating on issues of mutual importance to both the city and the university.”
Both USask and the City are focused on efforts to partner to be more purposeful and deliberate in the areas of reconciliation, strategic infill, transportation, sustainability, recreation, joint research projects, and student learning opportunities. In addition, many of the discoveries made by faculty members and students continue to be relevant to cities, such as in the areas of urban planning and community health, and can be used to make life better for Saskatoon residents.
The MOU serves as a leading example to inspire similar partnerships in the city, province, and country in the future.
Since 2018, City of Saskatoon and USask have partnered to advance:

Update: University Bridge now reopened to traffic
June 22, 2023 - 2:30pm
The City of Saskatoon has reopened the University Bridge to traffic in time for the evening commute today, June 22. A full closure of the bridge was put in place late yesterday morning in response to a fire underneath the structure on June 21. Repairs to the bridge following yesterday’s fire were completed earlier this afternoon.
Transit service has resumed normal operations on Routes 4, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 6. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.
We thank everyone for their patience and cooperation while Saskatoon Fire Department and City crews performed this necessary work.

Cankerworms Abundant in Saskatoon this Year
June 22, 2023 - 2:00pm
Cankerworms and leafrollers are an annual issue for Saskatoon’s urban forest. The trees may experience heavy defoliation but, unless there are underlying issues, the trees will recover and produce new foliage.
Cankerworms, also known as loopers and inchworms, are found primarily on the leaves of elm, ash, and maple trees. The fall and spring cankerworm species often feed together during June and July. They can be found hanging from silken threads underneath infested trees and can be a nuisance.
Leafrollers feed while concealed within leaves that are rolled or tied together with silk webbing. Ash trees are their preference, but they also attack other tree species. The larvae will feed in mid- to late-June, but the leaves will remain rolled throughout the summer.
Tree banding can be used to deter cankerworms; however, it is not effective against leafrollers. The best time to place bands on trees is from September to May to help prevent the wingless adult female cankerworm moths from climbing host trees to lay their eggs. It is important to remove the bands at the beginning of June because the bands can collect moisture and cause the trunk to rot. Unlike the adult female cankerworm, the female leafrollers have wings and will fly from tree to tree to lay their eggs.
The City does not control cankerworms, forest tent caterpillars, or leafrollers as they typically do not impact the health of the trees they attack. Homeowners interested in controlling them on their own trees should contact a horticulture professional for advice. For information on Dutch elm disease, wildlife, tree defoliators, and urban pests such as mosquitoes, please visit www.saskatoon.ca/pests.

Update: University Bridge repairs underway following fire response
June 22, 2023 - 11:30am
- From the east side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take Clarence Avenue to 12th Street and use the Broadway Bridge or use 8th street and use the Traffic Bridge or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
- From the west side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes downtown and to use the Broadway Bridge, Traffic Bridge, or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
The University Bridge remains closed to motorists as crews work to repair core holes that were drilled in the bridge decking to aid the Saskatoon Fire Department in its response to a fire underneath the structure on June 21.
Fire crews cleared the scene and there is no longer a fire risk on the bridge. City crews have assessed the bridge and there does not appear to be any structural damage. It is anticipated that the bridge will be reopened by late-afternoon today, barring any delays or unforeseen circumstances. Walkways on the bridge have been reopened for pedestrians and cyclists.
Spadina Crescent, below the bridge between 24th and 25th streets, has now been reopened fully for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
For your safety and ours, all members of the public are asked to please stay away from unauthorized areas on any bridge structure and to contact Saskatoon Police Service if they witness any unauthorized access.
Until the bridge is fully reopened, we ask drivers to reroute their commute:
This closure impacts transit service on Routes 4, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 6. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.

- From the west side of the bridge, drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes downtown and to use the Broadway Bridge, Traffic Bridge, or Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge.
The University Bridge remains closed to drivers and will not reopen for the Thursday, June 22, 2023 morning commute, however, the pedestrian walkways on the bridge have reopened. Pedestrians are cautioned to only use the walkways and to stay off the bridge deck as it remains an active fire scene. Spadina Crescent, below the bridge between 24th and 25th streets, remains closed to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) brought the fire under control at approximately 5:30 p.m. and will continue to monitor hot spots overnight.
Detailed inspections are being conducted to assess the bridge's condition and confirm its safety prior to reopening. Based on a preliminary assessment, there doesn’t appear to be any major structural damage to the University Bridge; however, further evaluations are necessary to determine the overall impact. SFD, along with EMO, City engineers, Saskatoon Light & Power and Saskatoon Water remain on the scene to continue to closely monitor the situation.
Maintaining the bridge's safety and integrity is top priority. Once further inspections are done, work will begin on rectifying any potential damage
The City is asking drivers to reroute their commute:
A timeline of when the bridge will be reopened is not known at this time.

Local students to have art displayed on buses
June 20, 2023 - 11:00am
Saskatoon Transit unveiled two unique pieces of student art today that celebrate the vibrance of youth using active transportation and will adorn transit buses around the city. This year’s student art contest welcomed students from schools across the city to showcase their artistic talents.
"We are delighted to partner with elementary schools on this project," says Cory Shrigley, Customer Support and Engagement Manager of Saskatoon Transit. "These students should feel a great sense of pride and honor when they see their artwork driving past on the side of a bus this summer."
Among the talented participants, students Amina and Hannah from Chief Whitecap School demonstrated exceptional creativity and were selected as this year's "best of show" winners.
The winning pieces were chosen in collaboration with the Remai Modern and submissions were based on their reflection of the "Active Transportation" theme.
The artwork will be prominently displayed on the sides of ten Saskatoon Transit buses, traversing different routes across the city throughout the summer.
Superintendent Nicola Bishop-Yong from Saskatoon Public Schools extends her congratulations to the students for highlighting the benefits of active transportation and showcasing what it means to be environmentally responsible.
"Through our 'Move to Grow' initiative, our school division encourages students to embrace active transportation and make mindful choices that support their well-being, community, and the world,” says Bishop-Yong. "I am proud of all the students who participated in this contest and expressed the importance of being community-minded stewards of the environment."
"This partnership with the Remai, the Saskatoon Public School Board, and the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board helps support and promote art, especially local art, alongside emphasizing integrated mobility," concludes Shrigley.
