Neighbourhood Traffic Reviews

The City of Saskatoon started undertaking Neighbourhood Traffic Reviews in 2014 so that traffic engineers had the opportunity to consider the traffic patterns of a neighbourhood holistically. Prior to 2014, neighbourhood transportation issues were addressed on a less effective case-by-case basis. Approximately 8 neighbourhoods are selected for annual reviews based on prioritization criteria that considers outstanding traffic concerns, number of collisions, existing traffic calming measures, age and stage of development of the neighbourhood, and regional representation across the city.

A typical neighbourhood traffic review begins with an initial community meeting, typically held between January and June, to engage area residents and hear about their transportation concerns. The Transportation Division then adds this feedback to existing data (i.e. previously reported concerns), and proceeds to undertake a number of assessments such as traffic volumes, speed and pedestrian studies, and site observations. A list of recommendations is generated, including items such as signage or traffic calming measures, and presented to residents at a secondary meeting (typically held between September and December of the same year). Following this second meeting, the plan is finalized and presented to Committee/Council.

Once a plan is finalized, the measures are implemented:

  • Signage may be installed (pedestrian crosswalks, no parking, stop and yield, speed signs)
  • Traffic calming measures may be installed temporary until proven effective
  • Sidewalks or any other permanent measures may be installed when funding is available

Online discussions (links below) are open for one month following the final community meeting.

Residents can also report neighbourhood traffic concerns any time by calling Transportation Customer Service at 306-975-2454 or by completing a Community Traffic Issue report.

Stakeholders including commuters, business owners, and people employed in the area were invited to attend a public meeting to review and discuss a draft traffic plan designed for this district. The meeting was hosted by the City of Saskatoon, Transportation Division.

In November 15, 2016 stakeholders participated in discussions that addressed traffic concerns in these two industrial areas. Based on feedback and information received during the meeting, recent traffic counts, and existing traffic studies, the Transportation Division has prepared a draft area-wide traffic plan.

Local stakeholders have two ways to provide comments on specific traffic adjustments being proposed.

  • A public meeting was held on Thursday, September 14, 2017, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Travelodge Hotel.
  • Can't make the meeting? Go to Shaping Saskatoon to review the Draft North Industrial Area-Wide Traffic Plan and join the discussion no later than October 14, 2017.
