With over 25,000 emergency responses reported in 2024, Station No. 1 on Idylwyld Drive and Station No. 2 on Diefenbaker Drive accounted for over half of those incidents.

The addition of two stations on the west side of the city would help alleviate the extra pressures put on Stations 1 and 2.

Station No. 10 is expected to improve coverage across the west side of the city and result in quicker response times.

In 2003, City Council adopted the National Fire Protection Association 1710 Standard. This standard outlines safe and effective emergency response standards for all services provided by the Saskatoon Fire Department in the City of Saskatoon.

Meeting the standards for fire station locations is important for delivering effective emergency services to residents and ensuring the safety and health of firefighters.

The SFD Strategic Facilities Plan, presented to the Standing Policy Committee on Environment, Utilities and Corporate Services on April 3, 2023, highlighted a significant annual rise in emergency response incidents city-wide, especially in fire Districts 1 and 2.

Both rising call volumes and new development in District 2 have increased the need for Fire Station No. 10.

Adding a new fire station on Hunt Road will significantly enhance emergency response times and public safety for the growing communities of Dundonald, Hampton Village, Westview and Kensington.

Q: How will the new fire station impact parking by the park?  

A:  Approximately 3 parking spaces along Hunt Road will be used to provide access to the station's driveway and parking lot. The current design aims to keep the number of affected parking spaces to a minimum. 

Q: How long will construction take to complete the new fire station? 

A: Construction is expected to take approximately 14-18months. It is anticipated that construction would begin in 2026 and the hall would be operational in 2027.

Q: What kind of noise impact will there be? 

A: At times, the Fire Department must use sirens and lights to improve response times. For example, during rush hour, to help navigate to the emergency more efficiently. Sirens are often used by the truck closest to the emergency location, not by additional trucks dispatched. During typical off-hours, such as evenings, sirens are generally not needed. 

Q: What kind of traffic impact will there be? 

A: There will not be any noticeable impact to traffic in the neighbourhood.  

Q: Dundonald Park is used for soccer and other sports. How will programming be affected? Will we lose the soccer field? 

A: The current soccer/sports field will not be impacted by the proposed new fire station.  

Q: There are hundreds of school children who play in that park. How will the construction site safety be maintained? 

A: The construction site will be secured with site fencing. Construction is not expected to affect the sports field area and children will still be able to play in the park. 

Q: Some Fire Stations have community rooms. Will the community have access to space in this station? How will the fire department engage with the community? 

A: A community room has not been incorporated into the proposed Fire Station No. 10. The intent of the current design was to minimize the space requirement for this station and preserve as much park space as possible.
