Responsible Cat Ownership
Keep Your Cat Safe, Healthy and Home
Every year in Saskatoon, approximately 1,500 confined cats are picked up by Animal Control. Sadly, only 7% are returned to their owners. You can help change that.
By spaying or neutering your cat, keeping them safe outdoors and linking a microchip to a valid pet license, you protect your pet—and help reduce community cat populations in Saskatoon.
Outdoor Play — Do It Safely
Cats can enjoy fresh air and outdoor stimulation, but allowing them to roam freely puts them at risk.
Safe outdoor options include:
- Using a leash and harness (maximum 2 metres)
- Building or buying a catio (cat patio)
- Taking your cat out in a pet carrier backpack
Important: Cats must be on a leash and under control when off your property.
Fines for at-large cats start at $100.
Spay or Neuter Your Cat
Spaying or neutering isn’t just about preventing unwanted litters, it improves your cat’s health and behaviour.
Benefits include:
- Reduces unwanted litters and stray populations
- Prevents disease and infection
- Stops heat cycles and reduces spraying
- Promotes calmer, more affectionate behaviour
One unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce over 400,000 cats in their lifetimes.
Funding is available to assist low-income pet owners to have their cat spayed or neutered. Visit saskatoon.ca/ssnp for more information.
Microchip + Pet License
A valid pet license linked to a microchip is the best way to reunite with a lost cat.
Licensing ensures your cat has:
- Quick identification
- Temporary shelter
- A direct path back home
Already microchipped? Make sure it's linked to your pet license.
