About Doors Open Saskatoon
Doors Open Saskatoon is part of a global initiative that began in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1990, celebrating architectural heritage and community engagement.
Launched in 2005, Doors Open Saskatoon was a collaborative effort involving the Saskatoon Heritage Society, the City of Saskatoon, the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee (MHAC), and the Meewasin Valley Authority. This event provides a unique opportunity to explore some of Saskatoon’s most intriguing buildings, many of which are typically closed to the public. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, informative displays, and exhibits, all offered free of charge, making it an ideal family-friendly outing.
The event’s inaugural year was inspired by the vision of a dedicated committee of Saskatoon heritage enthusiasts who recognized the city's suitability for such a celebration. Planning began in 2004, with the first Doors Open Saskatoon timed to honor three significant community milestones: Saskatchewan's centennial in 2005, Saskatoon’s centennial in 2006, and the University of Saskatchewan’s centennial in 2007.
Since then, Doors Open Saskatoon has become a cherished event, fostering appreciation for the city's rich history and architectural diversity.
