Industrial Tree Planting

Urban Forestry’s Industrial Neighbourhood Tree Planting Program focuses on planting trees in the City boulevard adjacent to properties in industrial neighbourhoods. The program's goal is to increase tree canopy cover and enhance the appearance of industrial areas. Funding for this program is provided through levies on lot sales in industrial neighbourhoods.
Urban Forestry identifies suitable boulevard locations for tree planting throughout industrial neighbourhoods. Business owners may also participate by submitting a Request a Tree application.
Planting site suitability guidelines are outlined on the Request a Tree page. Setback requirements may be adjusted in industrial neighborhoods to account for higher volumes of large vehicle traffic. For example, trees are planted farther from driveways than in residential areas to improve sightlines for larger vehicles.
A variety of non-fruit-bearing, large-canopy tree species will be planted to minimize impacts on landscaping. When submitting a tree request, applicants may select their preferred species from the list of available trees.
Once a planting site is selected, a green stake is placed in the ground and a notification letter is provided to the adjacent business. If underground utilities interfere with the proposed location, the planting site may be relocated or the planting cancelled. Trees are planted between June 1 and October 31.
Urban Forestry is responsible for maintaining trees located on City property, including watering newly planted trees. A water bag may be placed at the base of the tree to assist with watering. You can help encourage successful tree establishment by doing additional watering during the summer months.
Urban Forestry is responsible for the pruning of all City-owned trees. Certified arborists prune neighbourhood boulevard trees on a 7-year cycle. Questions or concerns about the pruning or health of City trees can be submitted through Request a Tree Inspection or by emailing urban.forestry@saskatoon.ca.
