Crossing signals changes for cyclists and pedestrians
The City of Saskatoon will be making changes to on-demand crossing signals for cyclists and pedestrians.
On Wednesday, October 15, crews will be removing the bike signal lights at 23rd Street West at Avenue P; the following day, Thursday October 16, at Clarence Avenue and 14th Street East and along 23rd Street West at Avenue H.
Although the bike signals will be removed, the dedicated push-buttons for cyclists will remain. These push-buttons are conveniently placed to make it easy for cyclists to activate a stop light along the main road and allow for a safe crossing. The Pedestrian and Cyclist Actuated Signals (PCAS) at Clarence Avenue and Main Street are an example of how this will work.
This change is intended to reduce conflicts in traffic control for cyclists at these locations where both bicycle signals and stop signs are currently present. According to The Traffic Bylaw and The Traffic Safety Act, bicycles are classified as vehicles and must stop at stop signs, even when a green bicycle signal is displayed.
Work on these intersections is expected to be completed by midday and should have minimal traffic disruption. Refer to this helpful information on pedestrian and cyclist crossings.
