Tree Planting Guidelines
Tree planting requests will be reviewed based on the following guidelines:
- Proximity to existing trees
- Boulevard width
- Infrastructure conflicts (e.g., sidewalks, pathways, driveways, fire hydrants, street lights, overhead high voltage lines, underground water lines, etc.)
- Proximity to intersections
- Proximity to traffic signs
- Planting area must be landscaped, up to grade and free from obstructions, such as large rocks, landscaping fabric, raised beds and artificial turf.
What to expect
When will my request be inspected?
Inspections are completed between May and October, in order requests are received.
What happens during the inspection?
If a suitable planting location is identified, a notice will be left at your residence or business. A green stake will be placed in the boulevard to mark the proposed planting location and the notice will include the selected tree species.
When will the tree be planted?
If there are no underground utility conflicts, your request will be added to the planting schedule and completed by the end of October. Requests that cannot be completed due to limited tree availability will carry over to the following year.
What if my location is not suitable for a tree?
If no suitable planting location is available, you will be notified by email and encouraged to consider planting a tree on your private property.
Who is responsible for watering and maintenance?
The City provides establishment watering for a minimum of three years. Additional watering by residents is encouraged during periods of drought. The City is responsible for all pruning and long-term maintenance of the tree.
Median Tree Planting Requests
Requests for tree planting in medians are considered a lower priority and are addressed as part of broader planting initiatives in areas with high tree loss or low canopy coverage. Due to limited resources, individual requests for median plantings may not receive follow-up communication from Urban Forestry.
What is a boulevard?
A boulevard is public land adjacent to private property that houses underground utilities and other infrastructure.
