Link - 1st Avenue
More information requested by City Council on Link First Avenue
At the City Council Regular Business Meeting on April 29, Council directed Administration to report back with preliminary, high‑level operations plans for the 1st Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. This future report back with provide more information on traffic accommodation measures during mechanical breakdowns, as well as how emergency vehicles would access and move through the corridor to maintain traffic flow and ensure emergency services are not delayed.
Link is key to meeting the challenges of Saskatoon’s future, by providing an important, more efficient bus service along a fixed route. These routes will be fed by traditional transit lines creating a new city-wide transit system.
At the April 29, 2019 Regular Meeting of City Council, Council approved 1st Avenue as the preferred corridor for the Link routing Downtown.
1st Avenue is a very key sector of the Link system routing, with important stakeholders and a high level of anticipated usage as well as being the area where all three lines will travel. The new 1st Avenue designs are an exciting move forward for the system and we are excited to share them with Saskatoon.
The design of the system along 1st Avenue, one of two areas where dedicated lanes for the buses will be used (the other is College Drive), has been updated to best meet the needs of transit users, drivers, pedestrians and other users of active transportation. These design tweaks were made not only for system efficiencies but to improve safety and accessibility for all. They are the result of years of working with stakeholders and the public all the way back to the original Growth Plan in 2016.
