Household Glass Pilot Program

 Takeit

Did you know?

90% of glass gets broken during recycling collection
In addition, glass becomes contaminated by other residual materials as it makes its way through the sorting process. Around 10% of collected glass is unbroken and processed for recycling. The City could use your help in making sure less of our glass ends up in the landfill.

In a step to improve the amount of glass that can be recycled, a pilot program in partnership with SARCAN has been established that will enable residents to take their glass items to SARCAN depots.

While the current Blue Bin program will still accept household glass material, residents are encouraged to ‘take it, don’t break it’ and avoid potential glass breakage by taking clean glass jars and bottles to their nearest SARCAN recycling depot.

How you can recycle like a pro

  • Always clean glass jars and bottles before taking them to SARCAN.
  • Broken glass is not accepted.
  • No refund available for glass without a deposit paid at the time of purchase.
  • Remove caps. They’re still recyclable, but lids are made from different materials and must be recycled separately.
  • Make trips multi-purposeful. In taking household glass to SARCAN, other items such as paints and electronics can be taken simultaneously.
