Motor Vehicle Collision - Confirmed Entrapment, Multiple Patients
At approximately 1:20 p.m. on February 10, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 11 and Grasswood Road. It was reported to fire dispatchers that two vehicles were involved in the collision, one vehicle was smoking, and that multiple occupants remained trapped.
Two fire engines, one rescue unit, and one battalion chief were dispatched for immediate response. Upon arrival of the first responding fire engine, fire crews confirmed the entrapment of three occupants from an SUV that remained on the highway, as well as the entrapment of one occupant from a truck several metres into a field. Neither vehicle was smoking or on fire upon arrival.
Fire crews stabilized and de-energized both vehicles in preparation for the extrication process, with firefighter-paramedics performing patient assessments and providing care inside of the heavily damaged vehicles. Using hydraulic rescue tools, fire crews immediately began extrication of the SUV's three occupants. Simultaneously, fire crews successfully evacuated the truck's occupant through a rear door without the need of extrication.
Multiple patients were transported to hospital by ambulance with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The Saskatoon Fire Department has left the scene under the authority of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
