Saskatoon Fire Department welcomes 19 new recruits
The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) proudly welcomed its 2026 recruitment class during a graduation ceremony on Friday, October 16. 19 trained firefighter-paramedics were recognized for successfully completing the department's intensive six-week orientation program and were officially introduced as the newest members of the fire service. Each recruit received their badge and battalion assignment, marking the beginning of their career with SFD.
All 19 firefighter-paramedics worked under the guidance of SFD’s Staff Development and Safety team to complete training in firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous material mitigation and community relations. The new recruits are also certified to the level of Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) and are licensed through the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics. Their extensive training and experience have prepared them for operating effectively in high-hazard emergency scenes.
"This recruit class brings an impressive breadth of experience and perspective to SFD," says Travis Brehaut, Assistant Chief of Staff Development and Safety. "From paramedicine and fire services to construction, trades, athletics and public service, these recruits have already demonstrated a strong commitment to serving others. Throughout orientation, they have built on that foundation, developing the skills, teamwork and adaptability needed to meet the demands of a modern fire service and serve our community with professionalism and dedication."
"The strength of our fire service comes from the people who choose to serve," says Fire Chief Doug Wegren. "This graduating class represents a diverse range of experience from communities across Saskatchewan and beyond. Their backgrounds, combined with their commitment to public safety and community service, will be a tremendous asset to SFD as they begin their careers protecting and supporting Saskatoon residents."
The new firefighter-paramedics started their first shifts beginning October 19.
Chief Wegren adds, “We are proud to welcome these 19 firefighter-paramedics to our team and look forward to supporting their continued success at SFD to serve Saskatoon.”
