Spring has sprung in Saskatoon; with warming weather, the Saskatoon Fire Department advises community members of considerations to make during the freeze-thaw cycle that has been occurring over the past month.

Many community members chose to use the City of Saskatoon’s storm water retention ponds for recreational purposes this winter. The Saskatoon Fire Department regularly tested and monitored the ice thickness at these ponds, posting signage advising of its suitability for use. As the temperature warms, the ice on these ponds has become unsuitable for winter recreational use. Fire crews will be visiting each of these ponds in the coming days to update the posted signage to read “No Skating”.

Additionally, the ice that covered sections of the South Saskatchewan River has also began to melt. The ice that covers this body of water is unpredictable and is therefore never safe for winter recreational use. Community members are asked to maintain a safe distance and never venture out onto the melting ice that covers sections of the South Saskatchewan River.

Community members are reminded to keep a close watch on children and pets when visiting trails, parks, or off-leash areas that may run adjacent to the South Saskatchewan River or a storm water retention pond.

It is advised that individuals always exercise an elevated level of caution when around any large body of water.

A Fire Investigator has determined the cause of a fire in suite 1502 at 2503 Louise Street to be accidental in nature as a result of soldering from the on-site construction. Damage was minimal and has been estimated at $200.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 4:02 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a possible structure fire in a multi-unit apartment complex located at 2503 Louise Street. The caller reported ongoing construction in suite 1502 with the concern that a fire may have ignited behind one of the interior walls.

Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response. 

Upon arrival, fire crews entered the suite and observed light smoke; however, no visible flame was present. The utilities to the suite were disconnected to create a safer work environment. Fire crews checked for possible extension of the fire by opening parts of the interior wall, as well as entering and examining adjacent suites; no extension of the fire was found. 

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. A Fire Investigator is working to determine a cause and damage estimate.

A Fire Investigator has found that the fire at 131 Primrose Drive was accidental in nature as a result of unattended cooking. Damage to the structure was extensive and has been estimated at $350,000.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 9:26 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls alerting to a possible structure fire in the area of the Lawson Heights Mall. The callers reported observing black smoke in the area, with Fire Dispatchers working to determine the origin of the smoke as coming from 131 Primrose Drive.

Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response.

Upon arrival of the first responding fire crew, it was confirmed that heavy black smoke was exiting the structure and that all occupants had self-evacuated. An immediate attack through a main floor window was initiated to soften the fire, allowing crews to make entry through the back door and transition towards an interior attack. Fire crews shut down the gas line to the house, while utility technicians were requested to disconnect remaining utilities. The fire was quickly brought under control and ventilation was conducted to clear the house of remaining smoke and carbon monoxide. 

One occupant was in need of immediate medical attention as a result of the fire, and was treated and observed by Firefighter Paramedics until transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

A Fire Investigator remains on scene and has not yet identified a cause or provided a damage estimate.
