Progress continues along College Drive corridor
Construction continues to progress on the College Drive corridor, with several improvements completed for motorists and pedestrians, and more work underway to prepare the area for winter.
Stage One of the Link construction project from the University Bridge to the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection is now complete. Landscaping is undergoing final touches and traffic signal lights are being installed at the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection, allowing for a signaled left turn into the hospitals planned for activation Thursday evening. Stage Two work from the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection to Cumberland Avenue is also moving along with pedestrian walkways and westbound lanes (north lanes) undergoing final work and paving.
Clarence Avenue will be fully closed in both northbound and southbound directions between Colony Street and Aird Street beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 22 until 7:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23. The closure is required for emergency Priority 1 sewer replacement. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes and follow posted signage.
As part of the next phase of construction, Cumberland Avenue will close between College Drive and Elliott Street beginning 7:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, for approximately four to five weeks as part of the ongoing construction.
The closure is required to rebuild the north curb to its new location and install new traffic signals at the intersection. This work will help prepare the corridor for operations over the winter season and minimize further closures in 2027.
During construction, Cumberland Avenue will not be accessible from College Drive, but pedestrian access along Cumberland Avenue will remain open. College Drive traffic will continue in both directions, with one lane in each direction. Traffic will initially use the south lanes between Hospital Drive/University Drive and just east of Cumberland Avenue. Once work on the north side is complete, traffic will shift to the north lanes while crews undertake construction on the south side of the intersection.
Existing traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection will be deactivated. Temporary pedestrian signals will be installed just east of the intersection to maintain a crossing. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to follow posted signage and traffic and pedestrian signals and use caution in the area.
Cumberland Avenue is expected to reopen for the winter once construction is complete. Crews will continue working to advance the remaining corridor improvements and open two lanes of traffic on College Drive in each direction for the winter, where planned.
