Severe thunderstorm clean-up underway
A severe thunderstorm rolled over Saskatoon and area overnight July 8 and into the early morning of July 9. The storm downed tree limbs causing power outages, creating obstacles and debris in streets, alleys, parks and open areas.
City crews have been hard at work since the early hours of the morning to get Saskatoon moving around.
Saskatoon Light & Power
Saskatoon Light & Power continues to address widespread power outages affecting customers across the city. Over 100 power workers are actively assessing damage, identifying affected areas and carrying out repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
The latest updates are available on the Saskatoon Light & Power Outage Map by visiting saskatoon.ca/outages and also saskatoon.ca/servicealerts.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as our teams work to safely restore service across Saskatoon and display the most up-to-date information on the Outage Map. To report an outage, please contact Saskatoon Light & Power at 306-975-2414 (24/7 hotline).
Saskatoon Fire Department
The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) dispatched and monitored 34 incidents over a 90-minute period overnight for fire crews to respond to.
The SFD Communications Centre also dispatched and monitored multiple rural fire department responses for cities of Warman, Martensville and the Towns of Osler and Dalmeny.
Fire crews responded to multiple electrical hazards of downed and arcing power lines which caused several small fires.
Roadways & Transportation
Roadways crews are actively clearing lanes, roads and catch basins of storm debris, including branches, leaves and other materials, to help maintain safe travel conditions and proper drainage.
Residents are encouraged to use caution during their commute, particularly at intersections where traffic signals still may be without power. Treat all non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops and watch for crews working near roadways. Additionally, crews are addressing any street signs that were blown down and traffic signals facing the wrong direction.
Waste Collection
Some waste carts may have blown over. If your cart was missed because it was blown over at the time of collection, crews will not be returning for a second pickup. Please ensure your cart is placed upright and accessible for collection on your scheduled pickup day.
Parks
Parks crews are currently responding to high-priority tree hazards, including clearing fallen trees obstructing roadways and removing hanging branches that pose an immediate safety risk. Given the significant number of locations requiring attention, branch pickup and debris removal will take several days to complete. We appreciate the public’s patience as crews work through all reported sites and continue cleanup efforts across the city.
