A sinkhole has formed in the South bound lanes of Broadway Avenue near 8^th Street East where City crews have been working on a water main repair this week.

Road closures are currently in place impacting the South bound lanes of Broadway Avenue and all East bound lanes of 8^th Street.

The City of Saskatoon’s Detours and Sign Shop have put in place signs and messaging for drivers to follow. Traffic is being detoured down Lorne Avenue and Victoria Avenue. These closures will be modified on Thursday, April 21, in the morning to allow for the contractor to address the sinkhole.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area of Broadway Avenue and 8^th Street, if possible, and to allow extra time if their commute takes them in this direction.

The City of Saskatoon will provide an update when road closures or detours are changed or lifted.

The City thanks citizens for their patience as the sinkhole is addressed and repaired.

Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution on streets and sidewalks after mixed precipitation, dropping temperatures and blowing snow. There was a lot of moisture on the streets that froze as temperatures dropped overnight. 

City crews, including ten sanders, worked overnight applying de-icing materials focusing on Circle Drive, bridge decks and other intersections. Eight sanders will continue today applying de-icing materials on priority streets and plows will be addressing snow build-up on Circle Drive. 

Driving conditions are expected to be challenging today as wind gusts and snow continue. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and allow for extra time to get where they are going. 

Summer road maintenance activities, such as pothole patching and street sweeping, are on pause as crews address this spring snowstorm.

The Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) collects and disposes of more than 11,000 needles each year. Discarded hypodermic needles are a concern at any time of the year, but spring poses a particular threat. As the snow melts, needles that were once hidden in the snow are uncovered.

In partnership with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, members of the SFD will be out in the community in the coming weeks for an annual community needle clean-up. Residents are reminded to follow safe pick-up and disposal practices when discarding needles:

• Do not recap the needle.
• Wear garden, work or medical gloves.
• Use tweezers, pliers or tongs to pick up by the end that is not the sharp end. Keep the needle away from your body.
• Place the needle, sharp end first, into a hard container that needles cannot poke through (e.g. liquid laundry detergent or bleach container).
• Fill a container no more than 3/4 full. If a container is too full, the needles may poke through the side.
• Put the container lid on tightly and tape it.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.

Needles should never be placed in city garbage or recycling. Alternatively, needles should be placed in a designated drop box. Call 306-655-4444 to find the nearest drop box location.

8th Street will be closed between McOrmond Drive and Zimmerman Road starting Wednesday, April 20, at 9:00 a.m. for roadway work. The intersection at 8th Street and McOrmond Drive will be closed during this project. Detours will be in place guiding motorists around the work zone. This project is expected to take three weeks to complete, barring any unforeseen circumstances or weather delays.    
 
Saskatoon Transit may be affected by these detours. Transit service alerts and real-time bus information are available on third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit on desktop.
