CITY ARCHIVES TO DISPLAY FIRST WORLD WAR BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
October 31, 2014 - 12:00pm
Mayor Don Atchison and City Archivist, Jeff O’Brien, will unveil the First World War Book of Remembrance at the City Archives on Thursday, November 6. The book is a gift to the City from the Military Institute of Saskatoon.
“We are very pleased to have been designated as the permanent custodian of the Book of Remembrance and to be a part of the activities commemorating the First World War, which had a huge effect on Saskatoon,” says O’Brien.
O’Brien says the First World War, waged by Canada in 1914 to1918, required commitment from everyone, not only from those in uniform.
“It required commitment from farmers, those who run cities and those who tended to the machinery of business, industry and government. Without civilians, there can be no soldiers.”
O’Brien says when we remember those who served and died in the Great War, we are also remembering ourselves and the massive effort put forth by every Canadian in supporting the war effort and seeing it to its successful conclusion.
Residents are invited to the City Archives (224 Cardinal Crescent) for the unveiling of the First World War Book of Remembrance on Thursday, November 6th at 5:45 p.m. The book will also be on display in the lobby of City Hall from November 10th to November 14th.

POPULAR CITY APPLICATION WINS CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT AWARD
October 31, 2014 - 12:00pm
Locating and repairing potholes in Saskatoon became more efficient this year with the addition of the online interactive Report a Pothole application. The app is popular among citizens who have the ability to quickly locate and report potholes on an interactive map from a desktop, tablet or mobile device. It was built on Esri Canada’s ArcGIS platform and this week, Esri presented an award to the City for increased citizen engagement through a geographic information system (GIS).
“The application was developed to improve citizen engagement in conjunction with the launch of our Building Better Roads initiative,” says Mike Gutek, Director of Major Projects. “Customer feedback shows 7 in 10 have rated it as good to excellent, and since then our IT Department has developed and introduced four more interactive web-mapping applications.”
All of the iMaps are available at www.saskatoon.ca/go/map.
·The Road Restrictions and Construction Projects map shows work locations and type.
·The Utility Cuts and Repair Schedules map displays schedules for road, concrete and landscape repairs.
·Saskatoon Services and Schedules shows collection and City services schedules.
·The Public Art Collection map details locations and information of the City’s outdoor art collection.
“We continue to offer traditional methods of engaging our citizens on a variety of topics, and through GIS-based technology they can find what they’re looking for within seconds,” Gutek says. “It’s one of the ways we are modernizing City government to reflect best practices and changing demands.”
