LIMITED ACCESS AROUND ROTARY PARK UNTIL END OF JUNE
June 12, 2015 - 10:21am
Beginning Monday, June 15, portions of Rotary Park, located along the east bank of the South Saskatchewan River, will be restricted for landscaping around the lift station.
The restricted area includes the east side of Sid Buckwold Bridge to the public washrooms, bound by the south edge of the Meewasin Valley Trail and north edge of the public sidewalk along Saskatchewan Crescent East. Signs and barriers will be in place for public safety.
Pedestrian access at the south end of the Sid Buckwold Bridge will only be available by stairs during the construction period.
Construction is expected to be complete by the end of June.

UNIVERSITY BRIDGE REHABILITATION ENTERS SECOND PHASE
June 11, 2015 - 7:48am
- Removed asphalt surface and expansion joints
- Strengthened columns and deck
- Repaired deck and installed concrete overlay to strengthen deck and provide smooth driving surface
- Removed, repainted pedestrian hand rail (still to be reinstalled)
The first phase of the University Bridge rehabilitation project is almost complete. Construction crews are finalizing repairs on the south side of the bridge deck, and are now preparing to begin work on the north side.
“We’re happy with how the project is progressing,” says Rob Frank, Manager of Asset Preservation. “To this point we have encountered no major surprises and we’ve had great weather, which has kept the work moving along nicely. In saying that, rain or unforeseen issues can still set us back.”
The following work has been completed on the south side of the bridge:
The pedestrian walkway will remain open on the north side of the bridge until the hand rails are complete on the south side.
Once traffic patterns settled after the closure, the City’s transportation engineers made some traffic signal adjustments to support easier movement around the city. Adjustments were made at the following locations: 1st Avenue from 20th to 24th Street, Idylwyld Drive from 20th to 25th Street, Warman Road and 33rd Street, and College Drive and Circle Drive West interchange ramp.
During the closure of University Bridge, the typical weekday traffic on the City’s other bridges has increased by an average of 8.6% or 6,234 vehicles. The City will continue to monitor traffic patterns as the project continues.

* The Broadway Bridge does not have an automatic traffic counter. We will be collecting some data
later in June that will help provide a sense of the traffic shifted to Broadway Bridge.
“The impacts to traffic, while not insignificant, have been manageable and Saskatoon residents have displayed a great deal of patience and understanding around this project,” says Frank. “We would again like to thank drivers for their patience as this necessary work is carried out.”
The City is continuing to encourage drivers to reroute your commute, take the bus, walk or bike. For more information visit saskatoon.ca/universitybridge.

LIGHTNING – HOW CAN YOU BE SAFE?
June 10, 2015 - 6:44am
Last year, in Canada there were over a dozen lightning strike victims. Many of those injuries could have been avoided. Do you know when to take action and what to do?
We now know that over two-thirds of all damaging lightning strikes happen when the storm is either approaching or has just passed by rather than when it is directly overhead. Also the majority of injuries and fatalities are not caused by a direct lightning strike but rather by ground current or side flash events.
The Canadian Lightning Danger Map for the prairie region shows high-risk lightning areas in red, with animation showing the movement of the storms. The map is updated every 10 minutes based on current lightning observations.
When planning outdoor activities this summer, it is important to listen to weather forecasts, weather alerts, and to keep an eye on the sky in case weather conditions change. If you realize you are in a lightning danger area, either because you hear thunder or see red on the Canadian Lightning Danger Map, take shelter immediately, preferably in a house or an all-metal vehicle (not a convertible). DO NOT shelter under a tree; lightning tends to strike taller objects.
There is no safe place outdoors during a thunderstorm. When thunder roars, GO INDOORS!
The Canadian Lightning Danger Map can be found at weather.gc.ca by clicking on ‘Alerts’ and then the region you are interested in under Lightning Danger. The map is accessible on mobile devices.
BLACK CART GARBAGE COLLECTION MAY BE DELAYED FOR SOME ROUTES
June 10, 2015 - 5:45am
Due to unexpected mechanical issues with the City’s fleet of collection trucks on Tuesday, Black Cart garbage collection for the Pacific Heights neighbourhood was delayed. Affected residents are asked to leave their Black Carts out for collection today.
This delay may affect other Black Cart routes scheduled for collection June 10-12. If your cart is not collected as scheduled, please leave it out and it will be collected by the following day. In case of a conflict with Blue or Green Cart collection, residents are asked to place both carts out at their normal collection point. That will be either front streets or back lanes depending upon the normal collection route for residents. A reminder to all please to ensure that there is at least four feet of clearance on all sides of each cart to allow for the equipment to operate and safely collect.
Find timely Service Alerts for interruptions to the Black Cart collection schedule at saskatoon.ca/service-alerts or follow @YXEServiceAlert on Twitter. The City of Saskatoon thanks residents for their patience.
For more City of Saskatoon Public Service Announcements, News Releases, Traffic Detours and Service Alerts, visit www.saskatoon.ca or connect with the City of Saskatoon on Twitter and Facebook.
