Large Item Pickup Pilot
A Convenient Way to Dispose of Large Household Items
Got an old couch but no truck? Replacing a mattress and wondering how to get the old one to the landfill? The City is testing a new Large Waste Pickup Pilot Program designed to make it easier and more convenient for residents to dispose of large household items.
The pilot offers residents a simple way to book collection of large and bulky items online and have them picked up from their property, eliminating the need to borrow a truck, make a trip across the city or figure out how to transport oversized items.
What is Large Waste?
Large waste includes heavy household items that cannot be collected through regular garbage service, whether you use a curbside cart or a shared garbage bin.
Some examples:
- Furniture
- Mattresses and box springs
- Large and small appliances (e.g. refrigerators, ovens, slow cookers, etc)
- Electronics (e.g. televisions)
- Tires
- Christmas trees – real and artificial
- Other oversized materials that do not fit in regular garbage service
Some non-standard items may also be considered for pickup. Collection of large items, such as hot tubs, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and special rates may apply based on size, weight and collection requirements.
How the Program Works
- Book a collection using the City's scheduling tool online.
- Select the item(s) you would like collected.
- Pay the applicable fee, which is based on the material category.
- Place your items at the designated collection location before your scheduled pickup time.
- City crews will collect the items during the scheduled collection period.
Residents may be asked to submit photos of the item(s) and collection location to help confirm pickup requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you testing this out?
The Large Waste Pickup Pilot study looks to explore a proactive approach to managing bulky waste. It looks to see if offering a bulky waste collection service can reduce illegal dumping by reducing the barriers to proper disposal. The pilot also aims to see if more material can be diverted from the landfill.
I have something large and not listed. How do I book a pickup?
Requests to collect large or unusual items that are not listed through the standard booking system must be submitted through webmail for review.
These requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
What materials are not accepted?
At this time, the Large Waste Pickup Pilot does not accept:
- Yard waste
- Bicycles
- Scrap metal
- Construction and demolition materials
Visit the Waste Wizard to find out where to dispose of these items. Additional material categories may be considered in the future as the program evolves.
Can staff help me move my items to the curb?
No, for safety reasons staff are unavailable to assist with moving the items from your home to the street. Please arrange for help in advance of your pickup if needed.
Who will be picking up my items?
Collection services for the Large Waste Pickup Pilot are being provided by Quint Development Corporation through the Saskatoon Wellbeing Employment Enterprise Program (SWEEP).
SWEEP is a partnership with the City of Saskatoon that helps improve neighbourhood safety and well-being while creating employment opportunities and supporting community-based services.
Learn more about SWEEP on the Quint Development Corporation website.
What are the next steps? How long will this pilot run?
The Large Waste Pickup Plot study will run for two years. Towards the end of the pilot a report will be completed that summarizes pilot findings and makes a recommendation to City Council for their consideration for a permanent large waste service. An analysis of options and cost implications for the recommendation(s) will be detailed in the report.
Phase 1 Launch: October 2026
Phase 2 Review: Spring 2027, including a review of service offerings and the acceptable materials list.
Pilot Evaluation and Recommendations: Fall 2027, with findings and recommendations presented to City Council.
