HHW Commercial Haul-In
Effective May 1, 2026, approved commercial companies delivering residential Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) on behalf of residents must follow a formal approval process before accessing the Material Recovery Centre (MRC). These requirements help maintain site safety, manage traffic, and ensure only eligible residential HHW is accepted. This service is intended for residents who are unable to transport HHW themselves.
What Residents Need to Know
- Residents must hire a City authorized commercial hauler to use this service.
- The approved commercial hauler will provide the resident a Residential HHW Delivery Authorization Form.
- This form must be completed and signed by the resident.
- A new form must be completed for each delivery.
- The form authorizes the commercial hauler to deliver HHW on the resident’s behalf and provides consent under LAFOIP.
- The City may contact residents to verify submitted information.
Materials and Eligibility
- Only residential HHW is accepted through this service.
- Materials must be listed and approved in advance.
- Commercial or industrial hazardous waste is not accepted at the MRC.
- Some common items (such as oil, batteries, and electronics) have year-round disposal options at the MRC or SARCAN depots and may not require this service.
Additional Program Information
Sorting and load preparation
If transporting an unknown chemical or unlabeled container, ask the customer what it is and document their response. If they do not know, document the following information:
1. What was it used for (ex. cleaning, weed killing, photography, etc.)?
2. Where waste the product stored (ex. garage, kitchen, or bathroom)?
To speed up unloading, loads must be sorted so the following items are kept separate:
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Propane tanks and canisters
- Oil and antifreeze
- Household hazardous waste
