Food Forest Demonstration Sites  

The City is installing two food forest demonstration sites in Boughton Park and Leif Erickson Park during the 2024-2025 growing seasons.  

Several sites were considered using criteria such as land availability, neighbourhood food insecurity and public accessibility. Based on the results, Leif Erickson Park and Boughton Park were selected as the highest priority sites.

Engaging with the community

A come & go 'open house' event was held at each food forest demonstration site during the first week of July 2023 to present the proposed food forest designs, answer questions from community members, and to get the community members' feedback. In addition, an online site design survey was completed, and the feedback received during the second phase survey was released in this Phase 2 Survey Feedback Report. 

A food forest stewardship workshop was conducted on November 6, 2023, for all the community members who had indicated interest in volunteering with the food forest sites during Phase 1 and Phase 2. The workshop was followed by a self-administered online survey from November 8-27, 2023, for those who were unable to attend the workshop. The feedback received during the food forest stewardship workshop can be accessed in this Phase 3 Workshop and Survey Feedback Report. 

The City also hosted a Come & Go Information Sessions for residents to view the updated designs, ask questions and provide feedback on the revised designs for the park upgrades. Two information sessions were held, one for the Boughton Park upgrade at the St. John School (Gymnasium), 1205 Avenue N South, on February 7, 2024, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m, and another session was held for the Leif Erikson Park Upgrade, at the Westmount School (Library), 411 Avenue J North, on February 8, 2024, from 7 to 8:00 p.m.

Food Forests 

The City of Saskatoon (City) is exploring the creation of food forests to establish safe and accessible edible landscapes across Saskatoon, enhance our green network, and contribute to the city-wide tree canopy.

Boughton Park Food Forest Demonstration Site

A Food Forest Demonstration Site is being planned for Boughton Park in the Holiday Park neighbourhood.  

(east of Avenue P S, south of Schuyler Street, west of Wellington Street and north of Gordon Howe Campground)  

There were several reasons why Boughton Park stood out: 

• The park is located in an area where 15% of households have income below the after-tax Low Income Measure;
• The neighbourhood does not have a grocery store close by, and is an area identified in the Green Infrastructure Strategy as an “Area of Interest to Increase Food Production”;
• Given the park’s proximity to a nearby community garden and school, there may be interested residents/groups who may wish to support and use the food forest.

NOTE: The design presented is a concept plan only. The food forest may be installed in phases with a smaller portion of the site completed in 2025.

Boughton Park 2024 Construction Update

• Site ceremony was led by the Survivor's Circle before construction began.
• Primary pathway (north-south) was installed.
• Irrigation connections were installed.
• Existing playground was removed. New playground edging was installed, with the remainder of the new playground to be completed in 2025.
• Tree bluffs were thinned to enhance site lines.
• Remainder of the site works will be completed in 2025.

Leif Erickson Park Food Forest Demonstration Site

A food forest demonstration site is being planned for Leif Erickson Park in the Westmount neighbourhood.  

(north of 23rd Street W, south of Rusholme Road, east of Avenue P N and west of McMillan Avenue).

There were several reasons why Leif Erickson Park stood out: 

• The park is located in an area where 30% of households have income below the after-tax Low-Income Measure.
• The neighbourhood does not have a grocery store close by, and is an area identified in the Green Infrastructure Strategy as an “Area of Interest to Increase Food Production”.
• Given the recent cases of Dutch Elm Disease found in the park, planting non-elm trees in this location could buffer some of the impacts of tree loss.
• Given the park’s proximity to a nearby community garden, schools, and daycare, there may be interested residents/groups who may wish to support and use the food forest.

Leif Erickson Park 2024 Construction Update

• Site ceremony was led by the Survivor's Circle before construction began.
• All pathways were installed, including a new sidewalk along Rusholme and crusher dust paths throughout the park.
• Irrigation connections were installed.
• Site was prepped for Food Forest planting.
• Remainder of the site works will be completed in 2025.
