The City of Saskatoon performed a series of upgrades to Leif Erickson Park in 2025. The upgrade addressed deficiencies, brought the park up to current standards, and included the installation of a food forest demonstration site, irrigation system improvements, and naturalized plantings.

Engagement

The City hosted a Come & Go Information Session for residents to view the park design plans, ask questions and provide feedback, on February 8, 2024, at the Westmount School (Library), 411 Avenue J N, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The summary of the discussions can be accessed in the Leif Erickson Irrigation and Naturalization Engagement Summary.

As part of the work being done through the Natural Infrastructure Fund (NIF) Green Network Project, Leif Erickson Park was identified in 2023 as a location for the installation of a Food Forest Demonstration Site. After more detailed review and consideration through the Park Irrigation & Naturalization Improvements Project and the Park Department's Park Upgrade Program, Leif Erickson Park was also identified to receive additional park upgrades including irrigation and naturalization improvements and other enhancements such as a new sidewalk, pathways and site furniture. The coordination of these projects reduced construction impacts, saved time and money by reducing the number of contracts, consolidated design/installation work, and optimized the use of the NIF grant funding.
