What We Are Asking

The City of Saskatoon (City) is reviewing our solar administration process and we want to learn about your experience with installing solar panels on buildings in Saskatoon. Whether you're a property owner, solar installer, City staff, or utility provider, your feedback will help us understand if there are challenges in the current permitting process, such as the approval time and costs.

The feedback we receive, along with best practice research and internal City considerations, will be provided to City Council in 2026. Your feedback will help us find ways to make the process faster, simpler and more cost-effective for everyone.

This summer we are engaging solar installers and contractors, property managers and owners with rooftop solar. Why We Are Doing This Work

Installing solar panels on buildings often requires multiple permits, which can be time-consuming and costly. The City of Saskatoon (City) is reviewing the solar administration process to find improvements to make the process faster, simpler and more affordable, while still ensuring safety and quality. By reducing administrative time, complexity, and cost, we hope to support more people in choosing solar energy, benefiting homeowners, the City, and the environment.

This project will review the City’s current permitting and approval process for installing solar panels on private properties. This will include looking at the current requirements, like development, building, and electrical permits, and comparing them with best practices in other cities.
