Saskatoon Fire - News Releases

At 2:54 p.m. on April 19, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a controlled burn that got out of control from the RCMP to SFD's dispatch center.  Fire was reported along Highway 60 south of Valley Road.  One fire engine, two tanker units, two brush trucks and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.  On arrival, a large grass fire that was moving quickly with the wind blowing from the East Southeast direction from 44 km/hr gusting up to 55 km/hr was encountered.  Corman Park Police were on scene redirecting traffic due to risk of the fire crossing the highway.  SFD's fire crews prioritized protection of structures that were in the fire's path.  With the wind gusts, this fire is difficult to get extinguish and to get ahead of at this time.  Partner fire services from Pike Lake and Delisle are on scene assisting with fire extinguishment at this time.  Water shuttling and supply is a priority for all fire ground personnel.  The fire has consumed a trailer and possibly some vehicles and continues to be a concern to structures. 

An additional three fire engines from SFD are responding to assist with extinguishment and protect structures.  Visibility is poor due to the amount of smoke in this area.

Further updates on this fire will be provided as soon as practical.

At 2:27 a.m. on April 18, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a house on fire with flames showing at the rear.  Four fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the fire.  On arrival, the fire crews reported the house was fully involved in fire.  Two occupants were in the house at the time of the fire and safety evacuated.  Firefighters began extinguishing the fire from the rear exterior and advanced their way into the structure.  Natural gas and electrical utilities were shut off for scene safety and the utility companies were called in.  At 3:06 a.m., firefighters identified the roof was collapsing.  The ladder truck continued to extinguish the fire while fire engines were strategically moved to assist and further support extinguishment of this fire.  Fire was brought under control at 3:26 a.m.  Once the fire was fully extinguished, the fire scene was turned over to the SFD Fire Investigator.

The scene examination is concluded and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  The Fire Investigator will continue to work with the Saskatoon Police Service Investigator.  Fire originated on the rear deck attached to the structure.  Damage from this fire is estimated at $450,000.  

No injuries occurred to firefighters or civilians as a result of this fire.  One occupant reported hearing "hail" like sounds which woke him up.  This noise was from the fire burning in the exterior wall.  An attempt to extinguish the fire was made by the occupant but the fire was too large.  Smoke alarms sounded when smoke entered the structure.

At 1:00 p.m. on April 18, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a controlled burn that was out of control and a large area of grass was on fire 10 miles south of Saskatoon on Highway 219 at the entrance to Beaver Creek.  One fire engine, one brush truck and one tanker unit were dispatched to the fire.  On arrival, fire crews requested SFD's additional brush truck and tanker unit to assist a "football field" sized fire that was threatening structures.  Fire crews made protection of the structures their priority by extinguishing and pushing the fire away from the buildings.  

This grass fire was brought under control at 1:30 p.m.  Brush truck remained on scene to extinguish hot spots.  All SFD personnel and their equipment have returned to their respective stations.  

Report all controlled burns in the R.M. of Corman Park to SFD's dispatch center at 306-975-3030.

April 17, 2022 on Easter Sunday at 3:16 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call of a house on fire.  Two fire engines, a tanker truck, a brush truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded.  On arrival, fire crews reported heavy black smoke coming from the structure with the fire breaching the windows.  A quick exterior attack on the fire was initiated at the rear of the structure.  All incoming fire crews were given their tactical duties to perform on their arrival.  Fire had started in the basement and burnt a hole through the main floor at the rear of the structure.  Natural gas was shut off for safety reasons to the structure.  Once water supply was established, entry into the structure was made and an interior attack on the fire began.  It was identified that the fireplace on the main floor had fallen into drop into the basement due to the integrity of the structure being compromised by the fire.  The SFD water tanker was tasked with shuttling water to the fire scene.  This fire was brought under control at 4:40 p.m.  A fire investigator from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) will be conducting the scene examination to determine cause, origin and damage.  

No injuries occurred as a result of this fire to civilians or firefighters.

The cause and origin of the fire that occurred at a motel in the 700 Block of Idylwyld Drive North on April 14, 2022 has been determined.  Insufficient cleaning and removal of lint inside the industrial dryer ignited causing $15,000 damage.  A Fire Inspection had recently occurred at the property and identified the ductwork serving the dryer required cleaning.  It was reported to the Fire Investigator a clean out of lint had been performed.   Remnants of lint were identified as remaining.  

No injuries occurred as a result of this fire.

Lint traps built into dryers are required to be cleaned by removing lint after every use.  Lint build up can cause heat to not escape the drum or ductwork and pose a risk of fire.  Ductwork serving dryers is required to be cleaned out regularly depending on the use of the dryer.  Most industrial dryers are used daily and require regular clean out.  If you notice lint building up in your dryer, around the dryer on surfaces such as walls and floor or around the exterior outlet - have your ductwork cleaned.  As regular maintenance, at a minimum all ductwork should be cleaned out annually.

At 12:58 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call from a passerby who reported seeing smoke from the roof of a motel. Four fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue unit and one Battalion Chief responded.

Upon arrival, crews saw light smoke coming from the motel. Firefighters began evacuating guests while searching for the origin of the fire. Crews located the smoke coming from a suite and identified a dryer fire.

The fire was extinguished by 1:10 p.m. and the building was ventilated of residual smoke and carbon monoxide. 

A fire investigator is en route. An update will follow.

At 9:21 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) was requested by Asquith Fire Department to attend a motor vehicle accident with a patient trapped. Dispatched to the scene were a fire engine, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief.

On arrival, SFD supported Asquith Fire with a semi tractor trailer and an SUV involved in an accident. SFD began setting up scene safety and prepared to remove one patient that was trapped in the SUV. Asquith Fire attended to the driver of the semi. At 9:43 a.m., by using a hydraulic cutting tool, SFD removed the patient from the vehicle and patient care was transferred to the ambulance service.

SFD remained on scene to assist Asquith Fire with cleaning up fluid leaking from the semi. The scene was cleared by 10:52 a.m.

At 8:09 a.m. on March 16, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) responded with nine fire apparatus to a 9-1-1 call reporting “lots of smoke on the fourth floor” of a multi-unit residential building on the 100 block of Avenue O South. The fire was discovered after persons were alerted by the building’s fire alarm activation and the sounding of alarms. 

Residents were self-evacuating when fire crews arrived. Saskatoon fire crews immediately initiated rescue and fire suppression operations. Approximately 20 more residents were evacuated by fire crews as SFD simultaneously conducted fire suppression activities. Fire crews entered the stairwell of the apartment and found a fire occurring within the fourth-floor stairwell. The fire was extinguished and the smoke was ventilated from the building. 

SFD’s Incident Command called for a fire investigator to attend. Upon arrival, the fire investigator conducted a fire scene examination. The cause of the fire was determined to be a deliberate fire act. Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) was called to the scene for further investigation and collaboration by both agencies. SPS will continue with a criminal investigation as a result of the SFD investigator’s findings. 

Fire damage is estimated at $10,000. 

SFD would like to remind the public that working fire alarm systems, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms save lives. Know your fire evacuation plan and procedures, practice the plan regularly, and if a fire is occurring, call 9-1-1. 

At 4:34 a.m. on March 10, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call reporting a fire in a home on the 400 block of Avenue I North. All four occupants safely evacuated from the home and were sheltering in a vehicle. Three engines, one ladder, one rescue truck and one battalion chief were dispatched. 

Upon arriving, fire crews observed smoke and flame coming from the 1.5 storey home. Crews advanced a hose line to apply water to the fire while another crew shut off the natural gas. Utility companies were notified and utilities were shut down to ensure safety at the scene. 

At 5:04 a.m. heavy flame continued from the windows of the second floor. Occupants in adjacent homes were notified and evacuated. Firefighters continued to extinguish the fire, resulting in heavy smoke.  

Firefighters extinguished all visible flames by 5:45 a.m. and the home was prepared for ventilation. Once the smoke cleared, fire crews checked the home for hotspots. 

At 6:07 a.m. a hidden fire was discovered in the back of the home. The crew on duty switched out firefighters on scene to avoid cold exposure and provide relief. Firefighters proceeded to attack the fire at the back of the home. The fire was brought under control at 6:32 a.m.  

After extensively searching the home, fire crews were unable to find the occupants’ four-month-old Shepherd puppy. The dog’s whereabouts remain unknown. 

The search concluded and crews declared the loss stopped at 7:52 a.m.  

The Fire Investigator performed a cause and origin scene examination. The fire originated in a basement bedroom. The cause of the fire was determined as careless disposal of smoking material. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

On February 19, 2022, at 5:11 pm, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a report from someone seeing smoke inside a house.  The caller did not know if any person(s) were home.  Three fire engines, a ladder truck, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded.  First arriving fire crew reported light smoke showing from the front window.  Fire crews entered the residence and identified a fire in the bedroom and the laundry room with water present.  No fire just smoke residue from what appeared to be an extinguished fire.  The Fire Investigator was called to the scene.

Fire Investigator determined the fire was caused by smoking material catching combustibles on fire when an occupant fell asleep.  Occupant used water to extinguish the fire.  $2000 damage.  

The smoke alarm was missing.  Our occupant was lucky to have woken before receiving burns or the fire spread further with devastating outcomes.  The fire investigator confirmed that smoke alarm records were being maintained by the owner.  It appears an occupant of the home removed the smoke alarm.  Smoke alarms are a life saving device that alert occupants in the early onset of a fire to evacuate safely.  Never remove smoke alarms.  

The fire was small and smoke was removed which allowed the occupant to remain in the residence.  The Fire Investigator installed a smoke alarm prior to leaving the scene to ensure this small life safety device was in place and ready to do its "big" job.  

At 7:02 pm, on February 18, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a garage on fire.  Three fire engines, one rescue unit, a ladder truck and the Battalion Chief responded.  On arrival, the garage had smoke showing.  Firefighters began preparing to enter the garage.  Incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties to perform on their arrivals.  It was reported that there was paint, acetylene, oxygen tank and a vehicle inside.  Upon entry into the garage, firefighters encountered smoke and began advancing to the area on fire.  Consideration was given to the effects of heat and flame impingement on the tanks and chemicals stored inside as a safety precaution.  Utilities were shut down.  The fire was brought under control at 7:32 pm.

The Fire Investigator on call responded to the fire scene.  A scene examination was performed.  Occupant had been doing work inside the garage an hour prior to the fire.  Cause of the fire was sparks from a grinder that caught used rags in the area on fire.  Fire originated inside the garage where the work had been performed.  Occupant heard a loud bang when it was realized the garage was on fire.  Tires being stored overhead heating and catching fire were the source of the loud bang heard.  Damage is estimated to be $100,000.

No one was hurt as a result of this fire.

At 9:05 a.m. on February 11, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call reporting a fire on the second floor of an apartment building on the 200 block of Avenue N South. Four engines, one ladder, one rescue truck and one battalion chief were dispatched.  

Upon arriving, fire crews observed heavy smoke coming from a suite on the second floor of the building. One fire crew proceeded with an interior attack and advanced a hose line to apply water to the fire. Meanwhile, another crew continued to evacuate occupants on all floors of the apartment building.  

The fire was extinguished by 9:22 a.m. and crews began ventilating the building of residual smoke and carbon monoxide at 9:24 a.m. Once the building was fully vented, occupants were let back into their suites at 10:02 a.m. 

During the incident, two occupants required care and were treated by SFD’s firefighter-paramedics for smoke inhalation. One patient’s care was transferred to the ambulance service and taken to hospital; the other was released with minor injuries. Two cats were rescued from the burning suite; one was declared deceased on scene. 

SFD’s Fire Investigator deemed the cause of the fire as accidental due to careless use of a flammable device. Fire damage is estimated at $40,000. 

The Fire Investigator was able to re-enter the structure on February 8, 2022.  Scene examination for the fire in the 300 Block of 109th Street West has concluded.  Fire originated in the service/furnace room.  Cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental due to combustibles being too close to the water heater.  Combustible material was ignited by the flame of the water heater resulting in the fire.  

At 5:04 pm, Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call of a structure on fire in the 400 Block of Avenue L North.  Three fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue truck and the Battalion Chief responded.  The first arriving engine reported a structure with flame and smoke showing.  Tactical duties were assigned to incoming fire crews and the fire investigator was requested.  The location of the fire was identified in the basement and interior fire crew were assigned to enter the basement.  At 5:16 p.m., fire crews began knocking the fire down.  The Fire Investigator arrived at 5:46 p.m.

The Fire Investigator performed a cause and origin scene examination.  

Cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  Fire originated in a basement bedroom.

Damage is estimated at $20,000.

The Fire Investigation into the cause and origin of the fire in the 300 Block of 109^th Street West is ongoing due to the current condition of the structure after the fire.  An update will be provided once available.

During the incident, firefighters were performing searches to ensure no occupants remained inside the structure.  While conducting the searches, fire conditions changed drastically inside the structure where all combustible material ignited simultaneously.  This created a flash over condition.  Two firefighters were in a situation where they needed to evacuate the structure immediately.  They took safe haven in a bedroom closing the door behind them.  This room had a window.  Using SFD’s tactical self preservation methods, they sent an alert over the radio that overrides the entire radio transmissions over the entire fire ground.  They initiated a “mayday” and relayed conditions, the actions being taken and their needs.  The two firefighters using their tactical training were performing a “bail out” where they broke the window, fire ground firefighters brought a ladder to the window and the firefighters used their training tactics to hook onto the window frame and leverage themselves onto the ladder. 

Both firefighters safely evacuated the structure without injury. 

An incident debriefing and peer support was provided immediately to the firefighters involved in the self evacuation and the personnel involved in this incident.

Firefighter safety is everyone’s priority but the job they perform comes with risks.  It is the extensive training beyond performing rescues and tactics where they practice self preservation that are integral to firefighter safety.    

With any incident of significance to firefighter safety, an after-action review is being conducted.  The purpose of a review allows for an assessment of actions taken, evaluate procedures and enhance safety if warranted. 

At 5:13 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department was called for a report of a fire in a furnace room.  Dispatched to the scene were 3 fire engines, 1 ladder unit, 1 rescue unit and the Battalion Chief.  First fire engine and crew on scene reported heavy smoke and flame showing from the basement.  Fire crews shut the natural gas off.  A power line was down in the backyard.  All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties and a safety officer was appointed.  Utility companies were notified by Fire Dispatchers to respond for scene safety and ensure utilities were completely shut down.  Fire Investigator was dispatched at 5:26 a.m. to attend.

Extinguishment and searches by fire crews were performed to ensure no occupants remained in the structure.  Fire crews had the fire under control in the basement but the fire extended to the main floor and through the roof.  The ladder truck and its fire crew were positioned from the hydraulic ladder to extinguish the fire showing itself in the attic/roof area.  Ground level fire crews switched from an interior attack to an exterior attack at 6:24 a.m. 

Fire crews are still on scene at this time.  

All occupants of the structure are accounted for and the smoke alarms alerted them to the fire.

An update will be provided at a later time.

At 9:42 a.m. on January 24, 2022, a fire crew from the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) were returning to their station from a previous incident when they came upon a two vehicle accident.  One occupant of a vehicle involved required extrication.  A rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to support the accident scene.  The police and ambulance service were notified by the SFD Dispatchers to respond.  Fire crews stabilized the vehicle and de-energized the battery to prepare for extrication of the occupant who presented minor injuries.  A hydraulic cutting tool was used by firefighters to open the driver's door to assist the occupant out of the vehicle.

The ladder truck from the closest fire station was required to provide extra bags of absorbent material needed to clean up diesel that had leaked from a one ton cube van.  An SFD maintenance vehicle also responded to transport and properly dispose of the material used to soak up the leaked fluids on the ground.

Patient care was transferred to the ambulance service.  Saskatoon Police Service were left with the scene.

Fire crews returned to station at 10:28 a.m.

At 11:48 p.m. on January 15, 2022, Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Center received a report that a garage was on fire in the 2500 Block of Clarence Avenue South.  Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and a Battalion Chief responded.  A fire crew arrived at 11:51 p.m. and reported heavy smoke showing from a detached garage.  Fire crews initially attacked the fire using the hose line in the bumper of the fire engine.  Access to the interior of the garage was made through the man door.  All other incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties to perform on their arrivals.  This fire was brought under control at midnight on January 16, 2022.  Fire crews completed checking all areas of the roof and attic to ensure the flame or heat hadn't extended.  At 12:46 a.m., the last fire crew on scene returned to their station to begin the work of getting tools cleaned and ensuring the fire engine was fully equipped and ready to respond.

A Fire Investigator had been requested to attend the fire scene.  The scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator who conducted a cause and origin scene examination.  Fire was determined to be accidental due to a block heater cord being plugged into an extension cord.  The cord had been pinched from the hood being closed and compressing it.  Fire originated in the hood area of the vehicle.  Damage from this fire is estimated to be $60,000.  Fire Investigator left the scene once the garage was secured.  

At 1:16 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call of a fire in an attached garage at a home in the 700 Block of Sutter Crescent.  Dispatched to the fire were 3 fire engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 rescue unit and the Battalion Chief.  First arriving fire crew reported smoke coming from the garage and occupants waiting outside.  Incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties.  The fire had broke through a window to the garage, fire crews immediately started applying water on the fire through the broken window.  This fire was brought under control at 1:43 a.m.

The Fire Investigator conducted a scene examination and determined the fire was accidental from a portable heater being too close to combustible material.  The electrical heater had been plugged in and running in the garage since 6 p.m. the previous evening.  Damage is estimated at $50,000.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.

At 8:36 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department Communication Center received a notification of a two vehicle accident at Highway 11 and Circle Drive.  Dispatched to the scene were one fire engine, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief.  First arriving fire crews reported a vehicle lying on its side with 5 occupants requiring assistance to be extricated.  All occupants were assessed by firefighters and presented no injuries.  The vehicle was stabilized for safety reasons.  Four children and one adult were safely removed from the vehicle at 8:55 a.m.  

A fire crew stayed with the occupants providing warmth and safety from traffic.  Occupants were waiting for transportation from someone they knew.  The fire crew left the scene at 9:20 a.m. and returned to their station.

Stay safe everyone.  

At 2:42 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a call for a smell of natural gas.  One fire engine, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.  First arriving fire crews identified a carbon monoxide issue and not a natural gas leak.  Readings were taken throughout the 7 storey hotel with variances of 10 - 61 ppm.  SaskEnergy was requested to attend. 

Fire crews investigated and identified the source of the carbon monoxide concern was one of the heating units on the roof.  Fire crews had the staff at the hotel shut down the defective rooftop unit.   Carbon monoxide levels began decreasing immediately.  Fire crews began ventilating the building with fans.  

Two hours into the incident, relief crews had to be sent as the fire trucks on scene were at risk of freezing up.  Temperatures at this time were -46 degrees.  Fire crews and their apparatus were relieved to avoid freezing from happening.  Ventilation efforts were never disrupted with this change out of apparatus and carbon monoxide continued to be removed from the building. 

SaskEnergy remained on scene assisting fire crews and assessing the heating equipment.  Just after 6 a.m., the readings for carbon monoxide were down to zero.  At 6:43 a.m., the fire crews left the scene in the control of SaskEnergy and returned to their stations.

No medical concerns or injuries were identified with any person(s) staying or working at the hotel.  Evacuation and/or relocation of occupants was not required.

An SFD Fire Inspector is attending this morning to follow up.

The Fire Investigator was able to confirm that the occupant from the fire that occurred on New Year's Eve has been located.  Our unaccounted occupant in the 400 Block of Avenue R South fire is safe, not injured and rehoused.

At 5:00 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) received a report of a fire at a mobile home in the 1500 Block of Rayner Avenue.  Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to respond.  It was reported that no one was inside the structure with one occupant staying warm in their vehicle.  First arriving fire crews reported smoke and flames showing on arrival.  The on duty Fire Investigator was dispatched at 5:15 p.m.  Natural gas and electrical service were shut down to the structure for scene safety.  An exterior attack was initiated immediately and incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties on their arrival by the Fire Officer in charge.  Safety officer duties were assigned to a Captain of another fire crew.  A City of Saskatoon truck was requested to provide sand/gravel on site to assist with icy conditions being created during the extinguishment by fire crews.

With the extremely cold temperature, fire engines freezing was a concern and another fire engine was requested to assist at the fire scene.  On duty fire crews switched out firefighters on scene to avoid cold exposure and provide relief.   This fire was brought under control at 7:31 p.m.

An SFD maintenance vehicle picked up equipment to return to the stations for thawing and decontamination.  

No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.

The Fire Investigator conducted a cause and origin scene examination.  Cause of the fire is accidental from a kerosene heater being too close to the exterior of the structure in an effort to keep water lines from freezing.  The wood skirting around the mobile home caught fire and caused $30,000 in damages.  The occupant was rehoused.  Our Fire Investigator had the structure secured and left the scene at 10:43 p.m. 

At 9:21 p.m. on December 31, 2021, Saskatoon City Police reported a structure fire in the 400 block of Avenue R South to the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) Communications Center.  Police saw the fire during their patrol.  Fire crews were dispatched and first arriving fire engine reported the structure was completely involved in fire.  Incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties and a safety officer was designated for the duration of this incident.   An exterior attack of the fire was initiated on arrival with limited entry into the structure due to the amount of fire and unsafe conditions met.  The neighbouring houses were at risk of becoming involved in the fire.  Some firefighters were assigned to protect the neighbouring structures. 

A portion of the structure involved in the fire had to be taken down with an excavator at 3:19 a.m.  It was identified that a wall was at immediate risk of failing from its loss of structural strength due to fire consuming structural components and the weight of water freezing to the structure.  The take down of a portion of the building also assisted firefighters to extinguish an area of fire that couldn't be accessed from the exterior.

One resident reported as living at this structure was not accounted for during this fire and Saskatoon Police are following up.

SaskEnergy and Saskatoon Light and Power were notified to disconnect service for safety precautions.  City of Saskatoon trucks supported the fire scene by spreading sand around the streets and sidewalks due to icy conditions created by water used for extinguishment.  Police maintained traffic control and the ambulance service was on stand by.  Thank you to our partner agencies for their support.

Initially 3 fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit, the Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the scene.  Firefighters off duty were called in to operate reserve fire engines to ensure adequate resources were maintained.  Throughout the duration of this fire, 10 additional fire crews were rotated through the fire scene to avoid cold exposure and provide relief.   The fire scene was also supported by SFD's maintenance vehicles to switch out equipment during this incident.  

The Fire Investigator was not able to conduct a cause and origin scene examination.  Damage to the structure is estimated at $150,000.  The area around the structure has been fenced off and a Notice of Closure placed on the property by the SFD.  An Order to Remedy will be issued by the Fire Investigator to ensure the structure's complete demolition occurs as soon as practical.

No injuries to firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.

Fire crews responded to 36 incidents during their 14 hour night shift with this fire being one incident.  Fire crews left the scene just before 8 a.m. on January 1, 2022.

At 2:55 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department's (SFD) Communications Centre received a report of a bungalow on fire in the 200 Block of Avenue L South.  First arriving fire engine and crew reported smoke and flames showing.  Incoming fire crews were given their tactical assignments.  A quick exterior extinguishment of the fire began.  Once the flames were knocked down then crews advanced inside.  Utility services were shut down and a firefighter was assigned as the safety officer on the scene.  Due to the extremely cold weather that was reported as feeling like -43 and base temperature of -34, fire crews were rotated through the fire scene during the incident.

Two occupants were home at the time of the fire and were reported to have evacuated without injury.  The occupants had left the scene prior to SFD's arrival.

A Fire Investigator is on scene at this time.  Damage is estimated to be $150,000 to the small structure.    An update will be provided after the completion of the investigation.  It is unknown at this time if smoke alarms were in place and working.

At 5:30 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a fence on fire in the 1600 Block of Cairns Avenue.  One fire engine responded and identified a fence and barbecue area on fire.  The natural gas serving the barbecue was shut off and the fire was extinguished.  A Fire Investigator was called to conduct a cause and origin scene examination.

The Fire Investigation has concluded, barbecue was installed too close to combustible material.  Barbecue had been used and shut off at 8 p.m. the previous night with a temperature reaching 700 degrees.  A wood counter next to the barbecue smoldered during the night and caught the fence on fire.  Heat emitted from the barbecue is the source.

Cause of the fire is accidental with $5,000 damage.  

No person(s) or firefighters were injured as a result of this fire.

The Fire Investigator and the Police Investigator were able to safely enter the front portion of the business and conduct a scene examination.  Multiple extension cords throughout the business were identified.  The cause and source of the fire was an extension cord plugged into a timer that was being served by another extension cord.  Fire traveled along the cord and proceeded up the wall and into the ceiling, catching the roof components on fire.  

Damage is estimated at $500,000.  Cause of the fire is accidental.  The fire originated at the front of the business.

The property is being turned over to the property owner's agent who will be responsible for securing the structure.

The Saskatoon Fire Department will take this opportunity to remind and educate residents that extension cords should never be used as a permanent means of wiring.  Safe practice is to have all small and large appliances plugged directly into an outlet.  Extension cords are a temporary source of electricity.  Exterior extension cords are heavily insulated to "weather" the cold to supply electricity outdoors.  An example is our vehicles during the cold months use exterior extension cords as the cooler weather allows the wiring to stay cool internally.  Interior extension cords should not be plugged in for long periods of time.   They need to be unplugged so they don't overheat internally or overload an electrical circuit and cause a fire.  As a safety measure, always check the condition of your extension cords to ensure they are not frayed, damaged or showing signs of aging.  Replace extension cords as needed.  

There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters as a result of this fire.

At 6:10 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible fire in the kitchen of a convenience store.  Three fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded.  First arriving fire crews reported a fire in the adjoining business in the center of a strip mall.  Fire crews were assigned tactical duties and work groups by the incident commander.  The Battalion Chief conducted a complete walk around the structure while firefighters hooked up the hydrant, readied hose lines and made entry into the middle business where the bulk of the fire was noted.  Battalion Chief could see heavy smoke from the front and the rear of the business.  

Firefighters began extinguishing the fire upon entry.  All utilities were shut down as well as service station pumps on the property for scene safety and necessary precautions.  At 6:25 p.m., the ceiling collapsed inside the business where the bulk of the fire was burning.  Fire crews backed off for safety reasons and continued to extinguish the fire from safe locations.  At 6:30 p.m., it was identified that the roof was sagging in a downward direction.  The Battalion Chief called for all firefighters to exit the structure for safety purposes due to risk of roof collapse.

Extinguishment continued from ladders against the building and the ladder unit without entry onto the roof.  SaskEnergy and Saskatoon Light & Power attended the scene to ensure utilities would not be a hazard or a safety concern.  At this time, fire crews remain on scene.  

The Fire Investigator is now on scene.  Police Fire Investigator will also attend. 

Further details about the fire with its cause, origin and estimated damage will be provided once available.

At 2:26 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call from a homeowner that her house was filling with smoke after lighting sage outside.  On arrival, fire crews identified a hole burnt in the exterior of the structure.  Using a thermal imaging camera, minor heat in the wall was identified.  Fire crews cut a hole from the exterior to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.  Minor damage to the structure resulted from this fire.

Any form of fire, even from a spiritual or faith based nature has the capability of starting a fire.  Never leave an open heat source unattended to avoid an accidental fire.  

This is a great time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.  Have a safe weekend.

At 1:54 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on the Broadway Bridge with possible entrapment.  A fire engine and rescue unit responded. 

On arrival, it was determined that extrication for one person was required.  Fire crews began setting up a safe work area with pylons and the fire engine in a fend off position to avoid further accidents on the bridge and providing a safe work area.  The person in the vehicle was covered in a tevlar blanket for protection during the extrication.  An SFD primary care paramedic provided care to the person in the vehicle during the cutting process.  Firefighters had stabilized the vehicle and checked their work area to ensure no hazards were a concern then with the use of a hydraulic cutting tool, removed the car door. 

The patient's care continued after removal from the vehicle with SFD assisting in packaging and loading the patient into the ambulance.  Patient's care was turned over to the ambulance service who transported the person to hospital.

Firefighters began cleaning up hazardous fluids that had leaked from the vehicles.  Debris was removed from the roadway.  A search by firefighters on both vehicles was conducted to ensure no other persons were in the vehicles.  Once complete, the fire crews packed up their equipment and returned to their stations at 2:41 a.m.  

The scene of the collision was turned over to the police service.

At 3:19 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received a report of a fire in a suite on the 3rd floor of the Lighthouse.  Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched.  On arrival, fire crews encountered occupants from the 3rd floor evacuating the building.  Tactical duties were assigned to fire crews and proceeded to the 3rd floor.  A fire was identified in a suite with heavy smoke but low heat.  The sprinkler system had activated and kept the fire in a small state.  Fire crews finished extinguishing the fire.  A Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene.

Fire damage was contained to the fire suite.  Water had drained from the suite and is affecting approximately 15 suites.   Water damage is predominantly to ceiling tiles.  Firefighters assisted with resetting the fire alarm system.  It is unknown at this time if anyone will be displaced as a result of the fire.  A Fire Inspector will attend to ensure the fire and water protection systems are serviced and fully functional.  Clean up will commence today.

The Fire Investigator determined the cause was accidental due to improper disposal of smoking material.  Damage is estimated at $150,000.  

No injuries to civilians or firefighters resulted from this fire. 

An update will follow to report if anyone needs to be rehoused.  The Saskatoon Fire Department will notify and work with the Ministry of Social Services if rehousing is required.

The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to 3 vehicles involved in a collision at Circle Drive and College Drive at 7:44 a.m.  One fire engine, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded.  On arrival, one occupant was extricated by fire crews without the use of a hydraulic cutting tool.  It was determined that injuries were minor.  Fire crews cleaned up fluids that had leaked from the vehicles.  After establishing scene safety, fire crews returned to their stations.

The accident scene was turned over to the Saskatoon Police Service.  

Use caution driving today and stay safe.

At 3:39 p.m., three engines, a rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched by Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre to a single vehicle rollover.  First arriving fire crews assessed the scene and determined that no injuries had resulted from this accident.  Incoming fire crews were then downgraded to a no "lights and sirens" response to the scene.  The vehicle was stabilized for safety and the front windshield was removed by fire crews.  The entrapped person was assisted by fire crews and safely removed from the vehicle.  The accident the scene was turned over to the ambulance and police service for further assessment.  Fire crews cleaned up fluids leaking from the vehicle.

Fire crews returned to station at 4:14 p.m.

Saskatoon Fire Department Communications Centre received received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a garage fire at 4:55 a.m.  Our first arriving fire engine reported a garage that was fully involved in fire.  Incoming firefighters and their officers were assigned tactical duties by the Officer first on scene.  A power line was brought down to the ground by the fire and a crew from Saskatoon Light & Power responded.   An SFD Safety Officer was assigned to ensure safety on the fire ground.  At 5:12 a.m., the garage had been consumed by fire to the point of collapse.  Fire crews continued to extinguish the fire.  This fire was brought under control at 5:39 a.m.  

Dispatched to the scene were a total of 6 front line emergency response apparatus, a Battalion Chief, a Fire Investigator and a service vehicle.  Fire crews began packing up hose lines and tools after extinguishment was completed.  Equipment that was contaminated by smoke, soot and exposed to gases created by the fire were transported back to station by an SFD service vehicle.  Fire crews began cleaning and decontaminating equipment back at the stations.

The scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator at 6:03 a.m.  An investigator from the Saskatoon Police Service assisted in the investigation.  Our Fire Investigator has determined that the fire originated in the interior of the garage which was reported as not being used for living purposes but household furnishings were identified as being present.  Damage to the garage and neighbouring properties is estimated at $25,000.  The exact cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  The Fire Investigator will continue to work with the Police Service in this investigation.  

No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.

At 09:35 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of a house fire with smoke and flame showing.  Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck, the Battalion Chief and a Fire Investigator were dispatched to the scene.  First arriving fire crew and their officer reported heavy smoke showing.  All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties and extinguishment was initiated from the exterior into the interior.  Due to an extreme accumulation of items in the yard and the interior of the structure, this posed an extra challenge to firefighters as they advanced hose lines and water onto the fire.  The fire was knocked down at 09:46 a.m. while firefighters had to work around extremely congested conditions in order to get to the origin of the fire and complete extinguishment.  Searches were conducted to ensure no one was inside the structure in need of evacuation.  

No injuries occurred to firefighters or civilians due to this fire.

The Fire Investigator identified many contributing factors to this fire.  The utilities were not in service at the time of the fire.  An inappropriate and unsafe heat source identified as a hand made furnace in a bedroom caused the fire.  The makeshift furnace was constructed of a barrel to allow for items to be burned and inadequately vented through the bedroom window.  The amount of items inside the structure contributed to the spread of fire and its challenge in being extinguished.  Damage is estimated to be $50, 000 as the fire extended from the bedroom and its window into the roof.  Cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

Due to the extreme amount of materials loitering inside and outside of the structure, the Fire Investigator will be issuing Orders under the Property Maintenance & Nuisance Abatement Bylaw 8175 requiring the removal of items and a separate Order will be issued requiring repairs to the structure due to the fire damage.  The house is being closed under the Authority of the Saskatoon Fire Department due to the lack of utilities, fire damage and the extreme accumulation identified.

One occupant is displaced due to this fire and has found alternate accommodations.  

The Saskatoon Fire Department has this week implemented a proactive emergency operations centre (EOC) to manage life safety and health issues related to those experiencing homelessness with the immediate goal of offering emergency shelter to anyone who is living outdoors.

“We believe there are likely over a hundred people who are without proper shelter in Saskatoon – that is, sleeping in the open or in makeshift shelters – so, we want to help them find safe, healthy and appropriate emergency shelter,” says Assistant Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer.

Raymer says this work has been ongoing but as the weather begins to turn, the situation is growing more emergent. The partner agencies including the Sawêyihtotân (suh-WAY-uh-toe-tahn) community outreach team led by the Saskatoon Tribal Council, the Saskatoon Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP), Salvation Army, Saskatoon Police Service, and other agencies are working together to achieve four main goals:

• Identify the places or ‘camps’ where people are living in makeshift shelters
• Delegate a task force group to the camps
• Talk to the people who are unhoused to build trust
• Offer wrap-around supports: food, mental health and addiction support, access to elders and counselling, COVID testing, and ultimately long-term housing

"This is about working together as a whole community to support people in accessing emergency shelter – we are working on keeping individuals safe and finding ways to best support them with emergency wrap-around resources within our capacity. Right now, though, we can’t in good conscience allow people to live in the elements as the weather continues to get colder.

"We have learned from experiences in other municipalities that when large encampments happen, those create greater health and safety risks. We have already been called to fires at makeshift shelters. So, of course, we want to find a way around that and help people with viable, dignified options and continue to offer them supports, even if at first they decline," Raymer says.

Community outreach workers who are part of a task force will be at the forefront of this work. The team will work together to connect with those who are houseless in the locations where they are currently finding shelter in parks, natural areas, along the riverbank and other areas in Saskatoon.

The Saskatoon Fire Department recognizes homelessness is a complex issue which requires a whole-community response and it will continue to actively engage all partners in a collaborative process going forward.
