Priority Street Snow Removal is underway
City and contractor crews have begun snow removal operations on priority roads across the city. This is expected to take up to eight weeks, barring any unforeseen weather events.
Snow removal is different from snow clearing, which includes regular plowing and grading. During snow removal, accumulated and windrowed snow is physically removed and hauled to one of three City-operated snow storage facilities. Priority street snow removal is activated when on-street storage capacity is reached, in order to create capacity for future snowfalls.
This work also helps restore full driving lane width and improve sightlines at intersections. This work is typically done at night to reduce the risk to workers, traffic, cyclists and pedestrians.
Snow is not stored or windrowed within posted accessibility parking stalls, school loading zones or Saskatoon Transit stops.
If another snow event occurs during snow removal operations, crews will temporarily return to regular plowing and grading activities to maintain safety and mobility. Once priority routes are again passable, crews will resume snow removal work.
Residents are reminded to watch for blue and amber flashing lights and to give road maintenance equipment the space needed to operate safely, particularly during periods of reduced visibility.
