Boulevard Garden end of season clean up

October 8, 2021 - 9:34am

UE21-2575

It’s the time of year to remove temporary materials such as garden pots and containers, bird baths, and ornaments from Boulevard Gardens to reduce the risk of damage to both the garden and snow removal equipment. Any materials left on site over winter may be damaged or destroyed by snow removal, snow storage, or other road operations. Residents must remove temporary materials from the garden site by October 15, 2021.

Boulevard Gardens are public, City-owned spaces beside local streets that are planted and maintained by residents. Boulevard Gardens can grow food and community, add beauty to neighbourhoods, provide habitat, and help manage storm water.

Find more information about Boulevard Gardens including where gardens are permitted, what approvals are required, what types of gardens are allowed, and the expectations for maintenance visit: saskatoon.ca/boulevards.

Sweeping on Saskatoon’s leafiest street begins Tuesday, October 12

October 8, 2021 - 9:59am

TC21-2574

Street sweeping will start after the Thanksgiving long weekend, weather pending. Fallen leaves are plentiful in some of Saskatoon’s oldest neighourhoods and can plug catch basins causing flooding in the spring.

The main purpose of the fall sweep is to reduce the risk of flooding by cleaning up the leaves along the curb. Another benefit of fall sweeping is that it improves the efficiency of the spring clean-up.

Only the leafiest streets in these neighbourhoods are included: Buena Vista, Caswell Hill, City Park, Exhibition, Holiday Park, King George, Mayfair, Nutana, Riversdale and Varsity View. The streets being swept this fall were selected based on their flooding risk and density of tree canopy. Find your sweep day at saskatoon.ca/sweep.

Like residential street sweeping in the spring, temporary parking restrictions will be enforced with ticketing and towing as required.

 How you can help us

  1. Pick up leaves on the sidewalk and boulevard beside your property. Please don’t push leaves onto the street because big piles of leaves slow down sweeping.
  2. Put loose leaves in your green cart or take them to a compost depot. Bagged leaves can go in your black cart.
  3. Watch for yellow No Parking signs and move your car by 7 a.m. on your sweep day.  Refer to Find My Vehicle! to locate your vehicle if it was towed or call our Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476.

Service Alerts will be issued for any unexpected changes that may affect the sweeping schedule, such as weather. Find more information at saskatoon.ca/sweep.

Construction on new lift station underway; detour to impact portion of Meewasin Trail

October 8, 2021 - 4:02am

UE21-2561

The Spadina Lift Station, on the west shore of the South Saskatchewan River, is nearing the end of its service life. Construction on a new lift station is now underway on the same site.

“We rely on the existing Spadina Lift Station to transport about sixty per-cent of Saskatoon’s wastewater from the sanitary sewer system to the Wastewater Treatment Plant,” says Russ Munro, Director of Saskatoon Water. “The lift station is more than seventy years old and has reached a point where major modifications would ne necessary for it to keep up with growing capacity. It is more cost effective to build a new one.”

The City is grateful for its funding partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan to help make this project a reality. Under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Government of Canada will fund up to $7.2 million toward the Spadina Lift Station project and the Government of Saskatchewan will contribute up to $5,999,400. The remainder of the $18 million project will be funded by the City of Saskatoon, along with any additional costs.

A second building on the same site was completed in 2016 and serves as a bypass lift station. It operates whenever the primary lift station can not meet the flow demand. Unlike the existing lift station, it will not be demolished and will remain in use following completion of the new lift station.

Beginning on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, the Meewasin Trail next to the lift station site will be closed and trail users will be detoured onto a temporary trail (see map). The original trail will reopen once construction is complete in 2023.

For more information about the project and to see a map of the construction site and temporary trail detour, visit saskatoon.ca/liftstation.
