NEW BRIDGE PROJECTS DEVELOPMENT REVIEW APPROVED
August 10, 2014 - 12:00pm
For Release: August 11,2014
The Meewasin Valley Authority (MVA) today approved the design parameters of the North Commuter Parkway Project and Traffic Bridge that will form part of the Request for Proposals that will be issued later this year.
The decision follows a development review; it’s a necessary step before construction projects occur in the Meewasin Valley Authority jurisdiction area along the South Saskatchewan River.
City Engineer Mike Gutek today outlined for the MVA board the contract requirements and parameters for the replacement of the Traffic Bridge and the construction of the North Commuter Parkway Bridge in Saskatoon.
“Following extensive public consultation, City Council decided very specifically on the replacement of the Traffic Bridge which includes capacity for emergency vehicles as well as pedestrian and cyclist traffic on both sides,” Gutek says.
Following further consultation with the MVA some design changes have been recommended to include a direct access ramp to the Traffic Bridge on the Nutana side and interpretive panels.
“Following the same process with the MVA, the North Commuter Parkway Bridge design will need to have specific design requirements for pedestrian and cyclist pathways,” Gutek says. “Also recommended are designs for storm water discharge, plus a limitation on the road width and speed for crossing the Northwest Swale”
The $252M projects are bundled and are proceeding with funding from the Government of Canada, Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Saskatoon.

OUTDOOR ADULT FITNESS CIRCUIT NOW OPEN AT RIVER LANDING
August 6, 2014 - 12:00pm
OUTDOOR ADULT FITNESS CIRCUIT NOW OPEN AT RIVER LANDING
River Landing is home to Saskatoon’s first outdoor adult fitness circuit. It is the most beautiful spot along the river for a quick workout. The circuit is a free, accessible, and spontaneous place to exercise. The fitness circuit is located at the west end of River Landing, next to Victoria Park.
Sixteen pieces of equipment are available to use for a workout involving cardio, muscle and strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Try out the rowing machines, cardio walker, elliptical machines, leg presses, chest presses, lat pull downs, pull up and dip station, multi-bars, agility track, and plyo boxes. Each machine will have an instruction plaque, showing you how to use the machine.
Now that the fitness circuit has been installed, the unfinished area behind it will be graded, landscaped, and will open by the end of the summer.
River Landing is the jewel of the riverbank, encompassing 36 acres of beautiful green space, public art, lookouts, Persephone Theatre, the future Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan, the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market and Ideas Inc., Prairie Fare concession, and the children’s water spray feature. It is bounded by 19th Street to the North, and runs from 3rd Avenue to Avenue C, down to the river walk beside the South Saskatchewan River.
